I've been running BFG's for years with no clearance problems or issues. They are by far the best tire I've tried on these vans. I keep them inflated to 50 psi and have no load problems...and I do load up my van!

I have a set of these coming in next week. Tire shop says they should be here Monday. I'm spending the weekend cleaning, sanding, prepping, and painting my 14 inch alloys to get ready for them. I'll watch the guys at the tire shop drop their jaws when I tell them to air them up to 50 psi.
I need to find another alloy, and order another tire, so I have a matching spare. I asumming the 27 inch tall will fit in the spare tire tray, right?? _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

Can't speak for PDXWesty himself, (or herself) but, I believe the only 14 inch BFG available is the 27-8.50-R14. I know for sure that is the size I'm getting mounted on my 14 inch alloys. Same wheels as PDXWesty has pictured in his post. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

50 PSI is the manufacturers rating for the tire. at 45-50 PSI on a heavy vehicle they handle great. I've been doing it for five years now no problems. |

From http://offroad.accessory-center.com/displ.plx/47/offRoadTires :
"Off-Road Tire Sizing
Most off-road tires follow an older method of sizing, called Flotation, instead of the metric sizing that's most probably on the stock tires of your truck or SUV.
For example, a tire with a flotation size of 27x8.50R14 has an overall diameter of 27 inches, an aspect ratio (the sidewall height) of 8.50 and mounts on a 14-inch rim.
A flotation tire is generally wider than a metric-size tire due to its construction, but the following table will give a general size comparison:
Conversion Table for Converting Metric and Flotation Sizes
METRIC SIZE---------- DIAMETER--------- FLOTATION SIZE
225/75R14 ----------------26.5 ---------------27x8.50R14
215/75R15 ----------------27.5 ------------(Same as above)
235/75R15 ----------------28.5 ---------------29x9.50R15
245/75R15 ----------------29.5 ---------------30x9.50R15
265/75R16 ----------------30.5 ---------------31x10.50R15
295/75R15 ----------------31.5 ---------------32x11.50R15
315/70R15 ----------------32.5 ---------------33x12.50R15
285/75R16 ----------------32.5 ---------------33x12.50R16

So, 50 psi on the top end, how about for airing down for soft sand? What is a safe low pressure to use with BFG 27/8.5/14's without having the bead break or other bad juju? |

Off of the topic, but has anyone ever run Hankook's on their Vanagon or Eurovan? I was looking at these BFG's, but they seem a bit too off-road aggresive, and the Hankook seems a good road and snow tire. That is the combo I am looking for. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Mad Max- I had to remove my Carat/Wolfsburg springs and put on '85 Westy springs to make 'em fit. They would def. rub with your Van mang.
I've been running this set-up for over a year, I could go on and on, four words of advice:
Get you some man!

Yeah, I seem to remember this from way back when I bought a set of BFGs for my old 4Runner. Sears was considerable less than Discount Tire. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

I'm getting conflicting reports here. So you're saying that the BFG 27-8.5-14's on stock alloys WILL rub on a 1989 Vanagon GL (Wolfsburg)? |

Are you sure Sears is quoting the same tire?
This is the BFG AT KO:
This is the BFG Long Trail T/A
The AT is $114, the TA is $82 on Discount Tire. _________________ 1987 Wolfsburg T25 still riding out. A bunch of other VW's passed on... |

I "think" what folks are saying is that if you have the Carat model, you may have rubbing issues. The Carat was equipped with springs that slightly lowered the van compared to "normal" vans. I beleive the GL is regular height, so you should be okay. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

I think (but not sure since I never try)...that the BFG 27-8.5-14 would rub on a Carat (with stock rim and springs) because BFG 27-8.5-14 is equivalent to 225-70-14 (the stock tires are 205-70-14)... I
would like to have opinions from someone having the BFG 27-8.5-14 on a stock Carat...
thanks
