OK Transmission gurus (Where's Gears at?)
What is the designation "DJ" mean after the part number on a 091 aircooled transmission?
This is the part number: 091 300 043 JX DJ
The only thing I could find was a DJ Tranny was geared more for the mountains, but I can't verify this.

There's a DU. Are you sure the J isn't a U?

What year? Date of production is stamped on the gearcase underside right(see Bentley p.3). Code; day; month; last digit of year.

Gear specs are all over the book. Pp. 34.1a-1b; 34.9 (DU's here); 34.19; 35.32-33; 35.60. They're probably some other places I missed.

The VW Etka shows it as non existent. Probably it's European. I've stumbled upon a DJ before. Don't have time now to dig in.

I checked in the german ETKA
the partnumber listed is the replacement
for a bunch of trannys that are not available any longer.
it seems that 1st - 3rd and reverse is the same on all the
gearboxes. 4th for DJ is the same as DH,DN and DO.
DO is the same as DJ exept it has locking differential.
ring an pinion ratio 41/7
hope this helps.
