I will be installing a new engine in my 1970 westy and this time it is tapped for full flow and i have the gene berg full flow kit. I was wondering where the best place to mount the oil filter, i was thinking maybe the rear engine brace. I was wondering if anyone had pictures of their oil filter mounting setub on their baywindow. the two oil lines gene berg gives you are only like 20" each. Thanks

opposite battery. It was there when I got it, but I spent $100+ on some aircraft grade hoses. Oil cooler on the outside. That is all I know about it. Razz

I mounted mine on the left side of the rear engine brace (right where it starts to curve up toward the rubber mounts) on the rear of the plate. The oil filter angles up toward the bumber bracket. Just make sure you leave enough room to be able to get the oil filter on and not hit the bumper bracket. Makes it easier to remove the engine as I don't have to remove the oil lines.....sorry don't have any pictures. The only thing is the lines that come with the Berg kit may not be quite long enough...

i mounted mine on the bottom side of the left battery tray. but plan on moving it due to a melted oil hose. if you do this make darn sure it doesn't touch the exhaust Wink lesson learned

instead of tapping the brace, i got a longer bolt for the rubber engine mount , made a 1/4" x 2" steel bar for the thing to hang from, and bolted the bar to the rubber engine mount/frame brace, under the left battery tray. wish i had a pic, its neat. mine was from berg also and 20" worked for me, but i have the obsolete Oberg filter, not the "system 1" or screw on.

I have a '69 bus and added an oil cooler and a spin on filter mount. I made a bracket using a steel and and an aluminum plate to hold the filter holder to the left side chassis. Mounted the steel to the chassis using 1/4" dia x 1" long TEK screws. They have a drill point.

I'll try to post a couple of pictures of what it looks like.

I'll be installing the Berg remote spin-on system soon and will take photos. Problem is....I have a new mount to made to accept the drilled bug block and it looks like the Berg pump will not fit in place of the stock oil pump without MAJOR modifications. I'll keep you posted. Building and restoring VWs since 1980 and still doing so at 76.

the stock oiling system got me 600,000 miles in my 1971 bus without any bearing or excessive wear issues. Good luck with that mustache bar clearance and oil pump.

It's idiotic to suggest that a properly done oil filter integration isn't an improvement on original design for these engines. Maybe if they had filters, we wouldn't have tons of the members here rebuilding the bottom end of the engines every 100k.

Type 1 bottom end: known to need rebuilt
Type 4 Bottom end: known to essentially be fine

What changed?

... Confused

Spike - go buy a stock 1971 and try to install a pump that is deeper or plumbed for an oil filter. It requires either modifing the mustache bar or the case. So given the choice of running 600,000 miles with no filter and a happy ending, or tearing the case apart to set it up for a full flow filter and a happy ending, which would YOU choose? And, reason tyoe 1 engines in a bus wear out has nothing to do with a filter. It has to do with the case getting beaten out or cracking from heat and stress.
