I am rebuilding my 36 hp. Had the crank ,cam and lifters reground.
Had the rods re sized. Getting ready to put the bottom back together.
Other vw rods have a mark to know what side is up. These 36hp rods dont. Dose it matter on a 36 hp? Dose the notched brg go up or down?
This is my first time, I have a friend helping me. He has done a few vw motors back in the day.But not a 36hp.
Thanks in advance.

Are you asking about rod bearings or the rods themselves? The rods have a number stamped into the big end that matches the numbers on the end caps. The numbers should face down when installed on the crank. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

I don't think it matters with the 25/36 hp rods. I think they are symmetrical.
The later 1500/1600 and I think 40 hp rods are slightly offset hence the marks so you can install them correctly.
You would need to check a Bentley manual to be sure though.

Radrob Make sure that your end play is in between .003-.005, and the your deck hieght ( For maximum Preformance is set at .060 !) There is nothing set in stone for deck hieght but the rule of thumb is set it at inbetween 050-.070. so I personally choose the middle I use absolutely NO SHIMS and if I have to take .005 t0 .020 of the piston tops ( have them machined) then so be it. But no shimming under the heads can create leaking in the future. Make sure all galleys are clean no residual rust I noticed that your case looked pretty Red in some area's. other than that have fun and break her in Gently then you can look forward to a long lasting 36er. today was my maiden voyage, now that i have my charging system working.I had the generator rewound for 12volts.
It ran great!I put about 30 miles on it today and plan on driving 50 to 80 miles tomarow.I will fill alot beter after i put a few hundred miles on it.
This was my first rebuild.
Thinking of taking it on a 350 mile round trip next weekend to the show and drags in woodburn Org.
I think the fuel pump should have a hump where this one has the screen. So i need to look for that, and a coil strap with a oval hole?

It would look sweet with a NOS brown distributor cap. _________________
