Can someone breifly explain the benefits of having a bus transmission or rear-end in a Thing? Is it that much sturdier? How does it effect the overall performance?

Thanks

Unless you are seriously into boonie-bashing, you won't see any benefit to doing a bus trans conversion. The bus transmissions are tougher than a type one, able to withstand sudden acceleration with big load-up, which is why buggy guys using big rear tires like 'em. as far as gearing being "better", that is a matter up for debate, as there are a number of gearing options available for the type one tranny, and depending upon your engine, wheel/tire combo, use of vehicle, etc. i personally have a 181 with a limited slip diff, and 4.12:1 R&P and find it is more than adequate for the vehicle.
