You also need to make sure that the air pressure is not the least bit low on bias ply tires.................Square tires handle "funny" . It really is all about the correct air pressure. |
17/24 !! |

17 psi front, 24 backs. I drove Beetles for years with 30/30 and never realized how bad they ride on tires that hard.
Bob is right, and if I let mine go too low, the bead leaks and they go flat fast.... _________________ John Henry

I found some B.F. Goodrich Silvertown tires and they are actually cheaper than some tires I found at Coker Tire. They don't list a 5.60-15 tire size, only a 5.90-15 and 6.00-15. Will those work?
Thanks,
Craig |
I'm sorry I wasn't clearer, Craig. My Silvertowns are radial whitewall, 165-R15. In the case of bias ply, the proper size for a Beetle is 5.60-15. The other sizes you list would look too big. (Though would look great on an early bus.) |

I am not familiar with 5.90-15.
6.00-15 is the Type 3 size.
6.00-15 = 165R15 as well so it may be similar to the size most people now use on Beetles.
For reference, Beetles originally came with 5.60-15 bias plies, which are equivalent to 155R15 radial tires.
Buses use 6.40-15 bias plies. _________________ How to Post Photos

I've been planning to buy Firestones for my '54 Beetle but haven't ever heard about the inconsistent quality issues before. Should I be considering the Sliverstones instead? I'll be driving about 2K miles per year. |
