This poor guy needs a complete brake job front to rear but I've never seen the set up I've got on the rear sytem. As I've understood, the brake shoes are held in place by set rods, springs and spring cups. That wasn't the case here. There aren't even holes where the set rods would be. Can anyone tell me if this is a south american set up or can I use '76 brake parts as replacements?

I am not sure of the exact date, but I believe it was in the middle of 1973 when VW stopped using the shoe retaining pins on the rear shoes of buses. Your 76 will not have them, this is correct.

Thanks for the information, I was coming to that conclusion after staring for quite some time at the backing plate trying to determine how the steady pins could be introduced to the backing plate.
