Even if the donor was wrecked, with the amount of metal work that went into this fake, you could have fixed the donor, and you could have something to be proud of. Its almost like have a 60 with a split window kit, I just couldnt take that to a car show and have to tell people its a fake.

You can see what is happening here. People with cars they really didn't want to sell have heard about these $50-$70k splits being sold, and are pulling all kinds of stuff out of the barns and garages. I have seen split prices go up dramatically in the last 2-4 years, but now anybody with any twin window body think theirs is worth 5x the last price they thought of.

There have been all kinds examples of this on this site lately....

Sorry, I meant stored *25* years ago...

It may be time to give up on a split for a while.

I accidentally posted this in the general split thread first, so now I'm moving it here:

The blasted and primered split just mentioned (see below) is practially the same price ($18K) as another one going for sale right now in the classifieds:

I'm trying to educate myself about these things before I "Take the plunge" and buy a split. How can two cars in such vastly different condition be offered for the same amount of money?

Well, you said it there, they are "offered" for the same amount. The real value will show in what someone will ultimately pay for it. Some people have unrealistic ideas about what their split is worth, others are fishing for a sucker, and every once in a while there are some reasonably priced.

That is just my opinion, I am trying to figure out the split market too.

Neither of those are worth that money, IMHO.

I like the blasted one, but the fenders are wrong. If it had correct fenders, and depending on what else is missing, who knows.

If I was looking at getting one right now, two I could think about considering would be :

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=368108

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=445736

Amazing, how 3-4 years ago, you could get an all original, almost perfect original split for $17k and people thought that was nuts!

Those would be the ones that I would look at too! May be alittle rusty, but look complete.

well I agree with split prices are crazy. But who am i to say i just sold mine for a fair price i thought for the year and condition and rarity (1946)
But here is what i learned that any thing pre 48 you will pay dearly for. 50's splits i can buy any day so why are they high. People pay high dollars because not every body can get one( even if you can afford it). As for the 45 that was mentioned,(which i also am looking at ) if i can with confidence restore that car for 50 i would take it. But i dont even think that would even come close just my opinion and i did a 46 ground up

Am I correct in saying this is HARDLY a KDF-SPLIT-Kubel air cleaner.. for one thing it uses the 9 digit parts numbering system.. which I think arrived during the Zwitter Era.... if not right after... secondly.. isnt 122 the designation for an Industrial Engine..... its a cool air filter... but you would think this guy with so many rare goodies would have a clue..... especially with something as obvious as a 9 digit number staring you in the face....

122xxxxxx part number means it is a rare 36hp industrial engine only air cleaner. You need to clean and oil it every 50 hrs. Every 2nd day is a bit too much work with a car cleaner : ). The more common industrial only is the one that has "to be cleaned every xxxx hrs" (betriebstunden) stamped on top of the cleaner (but no 122xxx part number.
The ones better for 40s cars read "to be cleaned and oiled every 2500 (5000) kms" = "alle 2500 (5000) km reinigen u. einöhlen" or "alle 2500 km auswaschen und einölen". These were also used in very early industrial engines.

I knew someone would flip this one.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=465691

too bad someone didn't get ahold of it for what it last sold for that actually wanted it. It would be nice if they would have waited a month or so after getting it before jacking the price up $2000 and putting it back on thesamba without doing anything to it. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
