In October my schooling begins at Wyotech in Sacramento CA. this is the leading mechanic school in the country and they teach the old lost ways of metal working and frown apon bondo and fiberglass. It's both a technican school and its a fabrication school as well. anywho in their hot rod/chassis fab class that I'm taking they allow students to bring in a personal project car and do what they want to it like sectioning, chopping the top, tubbing the wheel wells, roll cages, whatever you like. My idea for my car would be a '50s Karmann ghia delivery, you get the picture from these renderings, i'd locate a '60s ghia that is in decent nick and toss out the motor and a few other things including the roof fo turn it in to a fully functional delivery wagon. the motor would be replaced a type 3 or 4 pancake and the lowered a few inches, also the nostrils, headlamps, dash and tailights might be replaced with low light counterparts.
What do you think?
this is some french rendering i've found on the net (the lowering is a modification from the orig)
and heres some photoshopped ones that make it a delivery not a station wagon and smooth it out and shave a few things
I changed some lines to smooth it out and make it look more factory which is my goal
The side could be painted for some future Rod shop I will work in after I graduate. the rear window may be smaller but you get the idea _________________ "Fiberglass is for boats and race cars-Steel is real-fix it right the first time"-Wolff

I actually like it. Makes me wonder why VW didn't make a Ghia-wagon to begin with. Ford made the Pinto. AMC made the Gremlin. VW should have made the Karwagonia, which would be a good name for your car. |

My $0.02:
I like the grill on the rear-quarter - the third view. There's just something not right about f-ing with that classic Ghia curve. It ain't no GT40!
Very nice all-in-all. I'd enjoy checking it out at a show.
If it were me (and it aint!), I'd go with an older square back basis for the drivetrain and rear deck area. Or a 411 so you can drop a 2.0L type 4 motor in it. You don't really want to spend all your time futzing with all that crap. Take what's already been built.
Good luck with it. I'd love to see it someday.

There was a recent (last month or so) post with some photshopped images of Ghias - One of them was a wagon similar to your drawing. I liked it, and I like your drawings as well.
I like treatment with the vents in the rear quarter ala type 2 (ever consider '73 Thing type side vents?), but I like the air intake incorporated into the side curve the best. I know it's a classic line of the Ghia, but it just makes so much sense to incorporate the air intake grill there. |

Prepare to shell out bucks for that glass if you do that conversion. Having glass bent to patterns is very expensive, you might want to check into that first before cutting. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

I thought perhaps the type 3 Sq back was to boxy for the ghia and it wouln't fit the theme for a 50's ghia as the t3 came in the early '60s but perhaps with some smoothing it could work well. the rear glas may just be flat or something from another car at a junkyard and grafting it.
thanks to westcoast-paul for lowering the car, thats how i'd roll it, but maybe with air bags to support the rear when i'm haulin' stuff and with you help westcoast-paul, I lowered the delivery too.

Hello again folks, my schooling is still underway, im a bit over 1/2 done i will start my hot rod class in july, so my search for a good canidate is here, about 6 months back a friend and i visited a town about 60 miles SE of Sacramento and looked at a wonderful '70 ghia for $2k but didnt have the funds, it would have been perfect. now things have changed again, my budget has been cut down more since the start of my type 4 engine build project, but i did sell that '72 bug i bought to fix and flip for $2800, that only took 11 months . about $1600 is going to the engine( whixh will go in my '72 back home) so the rest is for the ghia project and making able to drive 1200 miles back to texas.
so there you have it, i guess you could call this a call for help in finding parts and more importantly a car. so im all ears to any good leads you guys have in the Sacramento/bay area. im looking for a pre 70 Coupe with an engine, unless it is real cheap and someone had a lead on a cheap engine, that is not a basket case and could be made drivable easily if not already a runner. interior and paint condition are no concern to me
here is one more rendering of the car on my '72( ive done the math on the cost to get it up here and it isnt worth it, besides i dont want to cut that one up ), yes it is rough but i drew it on a plane ride with alot of turbulence and i havent finished it
heres a new tweeked picture, the angles were a bit off and the fender was a bit fat so i rotated the car 2.2 degrees to lower the rear roof section, may have been a little too much cause the roof slants down a bit:
if you squint i almost looks real...ish _________________ "Fiberglass is for boats and race cars-Steel is real-fix it right the first time"-Wolff

BTW - weren't you making a scale engine from scratch? If you were, did you ever finish it? _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

When I first read what you wanted to do, I was all ready to dismiss the idea. After looking at the renderings, it honestly doesn't look bad at all. I actually kind of like the lines. Does that make me a bad purist? |

ok i got some facts on it, it is an original 69, decent pan with some rust, complete and posibly working engine but that is not installed, good brakes and suspension, clean title, may have some dmv fees however, new carpet kit, PO rearended it and poorly welded on a new front clip, that needs to be redone, $500 takes it, a man is suppose to go see it tommorrow to pick it up so id hae to buy it before noon. probably not happening.
that is a decent car for my goal, id rathe pay another $400 for a more solid body however. thanks for the tip ///Mink _________________ "Fiberglass is for boats and race cars-Steel is real-fix it right the first time"-Wolff
