So snoop doggy dog dogpilot's Wink message in another post got me thinking/worrying. Long ago I read the GoWesty article about this VW failure and quickly put it into that part of my brain that is concerned with taxes, diaper changes, and other morbid thoughts.

My beast has 200+k on it as of now. According to the GW article this bad boy fails as early as 70k and as late as 150k. Do you folks think that mine is gonna fail soon or do you think it was already remedied. I know there is no way for anyone to actually predict this (and I won't hold you to your claims) BUT what do your gut instincts say?

Cheers,
Kevin

Kevin,

It will last forever, or fail when you are rushing your wife to the hospital to deliver a baby or some other memorable event she will remind you about untill the end of time.

I just swapped out my non-locking tranny for one I bought with a locker and updated gears last August (you could see how enthusiastic I was about pulling the old one). I will keep the other as a spare. Of course with the price of Syncros reaching semi ridicules levels, perhaps I should rent a safe deposit box for it instead of putting it in the Hanger. Or I could put it on a chain and hang it from a tree in the front yard and call it art.

No matter how many miles it's run, that slider still has the 6 stress risers that the faulty design left it with. There's certainly some manufacturing variance in components, so some may last longer than others, and they get used differently by different drivers. It may never fail, or it could have a hairline crack developing right now. It's a risk you take, but as Dog sez, it will probably choose the worst posible time to decide to rear its ugly little head.
