I have one. Kinda. '85 sunroof that the PO put a poptop on. Its actually pretty sweet, cuz in the winter i can close the sunroof and i dont loose all the heat to the fiberglass top.Yet, i can put a bed up there and sleep, or get some headroom.
I have htought about restoring it to sunroof and having a sunroof camper.
I'm scared as soon as i unweld the thing, i'll find the gaskets are bad or something and it leaks. |

What do you mean, unweld the thing?
Actually the main gaskets, as far as I know are just the fuzzy pile seal around the opening, and that doesn't keep out the water. Some water comes past it, but gets caught by the pan. this, in turn, goes out the 4 drain tubes. If you sunroof is leaking, it is probably that the tubes are plugged with debris.
Locate them and blow out the debris with an air hose.
Yes, BTW, I have an 82 diesel with a sunroof. What a great improvement.

The poptop i have installed has hinges welded to the rear of the van, and a latch welded to the front. If i were to take it off i would be destroying an extreme amount of effort that most likely went into putting it on by the previous owner, and i'd be left with 3 ugly spots that i'd have to find a way to make look presentable. I do need a new canvas though, so the idea of just removing the whole thing has come up before. |

My 86 Syncro has a sunroof. All the drains are open but sometimes it still leaks. Don't care. It is my overall workhorse. Got it for $500. After a ton of work, it is a joy to drive. Love the sunroof. |

I do.....it's removed from the van and has been painted oyster white....the rest of the van is soon to follow. The only problem is the cables are snapped and "fused" inside the guides leading to the hand crank. I'm not sure what to do about it. For now....the problem doesn't exist... _________________ 1984 Wolfsburg 7-passenger stock sunroof

My sunroof may not count as a "sunroof" Vanagon. I cut it out with a saw. The trim is from a modified truck bed tanneau/cover. The snaps slide in a track and I have 3 removable cross members. The frame is mounted externally using metal skrews and NP-1. The canvas (under construction) will snap on.
I'm an Artist, Dammit. I did this to several cars in the past including my 68' ford wagon. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

WOW! I guess I didn't realize there would be so many. I will tell you I absolutly love the sunroof! I do sometimes thin of ways to use it in a camping enviroment. Not so much as adding a westy top but I was thinking of building a large roof deck with a trap door into the van. I could then place a tent on top. Laugh if you want but I bet it would be cool! Even if it was a small tent and the other half of the deck was just that, a place to set up a couple of chairs high above it all. Ever go to a drive in? |

Imagine a fully remanufactured Vanagon/Transporter with that in place of the sunroof. Add some Eurovan and Audi interior delicacies; Delicious
Now, here's the funny part; it's too SMALL The stock metal sunroof is about 42 inches wide by 45 inches long. If that company or any other one made a panel that mostly fit in that space I know I'd be tempted. _________________ 1984 Wolfsburg 7-passenger stock sunroof

That "huge" 27"x18" opening is no comparison to the size of a Vanagon sunroof. I like the design. I have seen Hatch kits that were pretty cool too. My reasoning was due to the fact there was no after market canvas "slider" kit that was size I needed. So I made my own.
Does anyone know of such a kit? _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

Ya know what... A person could cut the actual metal sunroof and install one of those in it using the original as the frame. But I'd still want a larger one to achieve a near-factory look. _________________ 1984 Wolfsburg 7-passenger stock sunroof

Agreed. Not not nearly big enough, but I've got serious sunroof envy! I've also noticed the big center sunroofs on Toyota Previas. Might be interesting to bring the two together at a salvage yard and see what happens.
The previa slides on top, so it might hit the rear speed bump. |

Good to here VWGIRL. Gotta love those $500 deals. Mine was ready for the junkyard but I drove it home and fell in love with it. Trying to keep the rust to a minimum but man it just keeps coming back. Then again, it doesn't help driving it in the salt but why else would I have a Syncro in Wisconsin??? Need it for the snow. |
