I would make them. You can pick the material you like as apposed to selecting from a few. Sewing is really simple, and curtains are pretty darn easy to make. |

Yep, I agree. It's hard to find used curtains that aren't faded, and the new ones are a bit pricey.

I'm sure that the usual vendors (gowesty, busdepot, etc.) have 'em in standard colors. It might be nicer to find some decent material to make your own "special" curtains tho' _________________ 79 VW Westfalia

I made mine last year, actually my girlfriend did most of it, but it ain't cheap either.
Fabric cost alone was $90 plus a little more for things like a fabric pen, better scissors, thread, etc. So I would figure about 100 even if you want decent fabric, although nothing is going to last too long. It all fades.
Although if you have the time and don't mind working on it for a while you can make much nicer ones that fit how you want them yourself. |

All this info is accurate. My wife made a set for my '71 transporter. It was a lot of work, but if you have the time it is worth it. A couple tips I can add are, go to the Ace Hardware store and get the cad plated hooks they carry them in a little pack for like $2. They have a hole that you use to mount them with a self-tapping screw. Go to the boat supply store and get the bungee cord to use to support the curtains. Get electrical ring connectors and crimp those to the ends of the bungee cord. Use a lighter to melt the ends of the bungee so they do not fray. Then you got your curtain "rods". Hopefully you have a garmet district like we have here in Los Angeles. Immigrants run these little fabric shops and they sell fabric in great big bolts for dirt cheap, much cheaper than the retail fabric stores. |

my lovely wife made the curtains for our westy last summer at a cost of $30.00. we do still use the original green front window curtain which seems like it might be a biatch to construct. ps...we found copius amounts of homebrew helped us concentrate and fueled our efforts to succeed.

My wife just made curtains for our 69 Westy also. I upgraded the curtain rod on the left side and replaced the missing runner on the slider with a neat system that I got through West Marine called the Recmar Snap System. Used bungie cord and nylon wire hangers to hold the curtains back.

We could have definately cut some more costs on the curtains but they look pretty good, maybe a bit fancier than is needed. They are tan on the inside with Blue and orange checkers on the outside with blackout material sandwhiched in between. We camp alot and it was nice to have some that were really dark for in the morning when we are too tired to get up after a long day climbing. They make the inside look good too with the light tan color.

I guess I am lucky. When I was cleaning out my bus after purchase (a year ago), I found the original green curtains in a garbage bag in one of the cabinets. All in good shape. Only one, the one behind the wardrobe cabinet, was faded. _________________ Eric
