I'm in the process of building a VW trike, using a '72 Super Beetle as my donar vehicle. My question is, I have to offset my shift rod a little, well offset or bend, I know that the old buses had a fixed shift rod, but on bugs the shifter can rotate in the rod, is there anything wrong with making the shift handle to rod connection solid, so it can't rotate. Thus allowing me to put a 90 degree bend in the shift handle so it will stick out under the seat and still be able to shift. This won't work if the shifter has to be able to rotate. Hope this makes sense and would appreciate any comments. |

That's what a lot of guys do anyway, Larry. Most mount their shifters on the side of the body if the body covers the seat up to the tree. For more options and opinions, you might want to check out http://btw-trikers.org/uploads/forum.php
which is strictly dedicated to VW trike builders. Personally, I'm building (with help) a mid-engine trike, so my linkage is just a little different!

Be sure to use a skull or 8 ball for the shift knob, anything else is bad luck.
