Finally broke the drain plug loose on the tranny today so I purchased some Redline MT90 and proceeded to change the oil. Well I pull the plug and it was full of metal shavings and 4 ball berrings. I also fished out a thin piece of metal that turned out to be a bearing sleeve with the drain magnet. The sleeve says RollAx 091301120 on it. I looked up the # but all I could find about it is Ball Sleeve. Does anyone know what bearing this is or any info about it? I haven't been having very good luck with my new van but its a long story Sad

Being able to read part numbers is worse.

Shavings on the magnetic drain plug are normal, any chunks, teeth, or hunks of metal are bad(if you can read the part numbers, ouch), sorry but Glenn is right.

I bought the Wolfberg Syncro in March From JDM Imports in Co. They said it recently had a full major service and that the tranny had been rebuilt. Well so far the ingnition switch burned up on the way home the day i purchased it, the throttle spring broke, the small hose from the oil cooler busted leaving us stranded 100 miles from home, the header broke compleatly at the flange in the middle of a 200 mile trip, it was experiencing Vanagon Syndrome witch turned out to improper belt tension, and now this. I'm growing tired. Fortunately the Syncro came with a warranty that covers the tranny so we'll see. I'm sceptical. Unfortunately we had a week long camping trip planned in less than two weeks.

I would go over it all carefully before you embark on any long trips , and I hope they honor the warrenty, syncro tranny isn't cheap.

Found it! RollAX 091301120 is a shift rod bushing. Page 35.76 in the Bently.

I THINK that's one of the ball sleeves that the shift rods glide on. It could ONLY come out because the tranny was incorrectly assembled. These support the shafts in holes in the case. I'd think that without one, the shifting on that fork would be pretty sloppy. IT MIGHT be stable enough for some continued driving. ( I'm not sure what subsequent damage could result, but it seems like not much. Perhaps wear on the fork. And it's probably already occurred.)

Thanks Al. I may try to PM "gears" this evening. The shifting has been sloppy from day one. I thought it was just normal as this is my first vanagon. I'm going to change the gear oil and try it out. I may go on my camping trip anyway and just have it fixed afterwards.

I just replaced my tranny about 2 months ago. My ring and pinion were going and it sounded like I was driving a 747. This is what my drain plug looked like the last two times I replaced my fluid. Pretty sweet.

Tranny is in your future...

If it is still operational, you may get the core charge back, depending on who you go to and IF the tranny is still deemed good.

My .02's is to go into the reciepts and find out who did the tranny work and with much poise and guile, state your case to those who did the work. Syncro trannies are a different beast than the norm, so if any type of warranty is there...

Finding a used Syncro tranny is tricky. Best to take the un-lubed bend over and get rebuilt.

I feel your pain. My good friend and I did a swap on his Syncro tranny and the "new" tranny crunches when downshifting into 3rd. He is not happy with the deal Mad
