Ok, here's a really dumb question. I'm getting ready to put the engine back in my 56 Euro Beetle and get it on the road soon. Somewhere along the line I acquired a rebuilt 6v starter. It came with a brass bushing. The starter won't fit into the transmission with the bushing on. Where does it go?

Thanks,
Craig

The bronze bushing goes in the transmission housing.

It is a lot easier to replace with the engine out.

Consider purchasing a Bentley manual. It is the best source for even the most basic tasks.

I've got a Bentley manual and there is no mention of the bushing. I have the engine out now and there is no way that a bushing will fit. The starter shaft is snug in the transmission housing without the bushing.

that's because you have to remove the bushing that is already in there. If it is not worn you really don't need to replace it.

You only replace the bushing if it is already worn out. If the starter will run with the bushing found in the transmission, then, it is fine; otherwise, you have to remove the old one and replace it with another one.
