Ok, so I have a general idea on how these work, I know you fill them with ice and the air blows by it but I want to know exactly whats inside of them, I'd like to build one out of aluminum and want to know if anyone has blueprints or a diagram I could base one off of.

Ice? Water in it's liquid form is what's used. Inside is some straw (sort of like hay) inside a cylinder made of chicken wire. This chicken wire cage is emersed halfway into the water. There are some pulls strings which tumbles the cage around in the water to get the straw wet. When the car is in motion, air gets pushed through the damp straw & into the passenger compartment.

Mine has a tank on the rear of it that is filled with water. In the front section sits a large sponge. There is a push type spray valve that is connected to the water tank. When you push the spray button water runs to the sponge through a rubber hose. Do a search on EBay for "swampcooler". There are some nice custom coolers there.

Why these things have never been knocked off in Mexico is beyond me. One would think that an enterprising cottage industry out in the boonies somewhere could make a decent income by making and selling these.

I use dry ice in mine. Water seems to create a mildew smell after some time.

Dry ice?? Shocked
Isn't it tough getting it through the little access port?

Personally, I just dump a couple of bags of ice from the convenience store on the floor of the car. Keeps things cool and the dog has something
to drink when it melts. Wink

Keep doing that and eventually your pan ends up looking like this.

I used one in the 90's on my oval. Thermodor. Problems areas are: Originally spot welded together and not serviceable thus slinging rusty water at you at highway speed (felt good on hot day). Stop lights suck, no breeze through car at all. People will almost crash into you trying to see what the heck you have hanging off the side of you car. Seriously, almost had some guys side swipe me while I was going to a MOKAN show. Good points: Great static show piece. The wing windows provided much more air and bugs.

Here's one I ran on my old 63. It would freeze the heck out
of you. I still have it. I wished I still had my old ride. I guess
I'll sell it one of these days. It needs a bit of work where the
back lid tightens up to the box. I liked it because it fit right
into the window space perfect. Just roll down the window a
bit, slip it into place and roll up the window. I had a lot of
fun with it. It got to be where I had to drive on the right side
of the freeway because if I didn't, It would cause wrecks
with people craining their gourds trying to figure out what
the heck that thing was hanging on the side of my ride.. Laughing >
