I recently buy used stock air cleaner for my 181.

as you can see, there is a hole between breather port and heatriser port.
anyone know what actually missing there?

then this pic from thingshop

there is no hole, but shiny metal there...
what is it? and the function?

I have one last question. it is okay to use this carb sleeve? (plz look at below)

it is possible the carb suck air from the sleeve's lip? because the lip is worn and not tightly close air passage.
in other word, need to find other good sleeve

many thanks

The part that you are missing is a hinge connected to a flap in the intake. The hinge has a brass weight on it so that it closes (or in my case, flops between open and closed) at low air speeds, i.e., idle. At higher speeds the force of the intake air will keep it open. My *guess* is that the flap maintains a smoother airflow and/or faster airflow at idle which could have a number benefits in either the efficiency of the filter or in the flow to the carb. Or it could just be a device to keep the gasses from the breather system from spilling out of the front of the filter at low speeds -- again, I'm just guessing here.

I don't know if you can buy that part separately, but the filter should (mostly) work without it.

As for the connection to the carb, is there enough "meat" on the part so as to get a clamp on there? As long as the clamp can form a good seal, it should work.

Yep, that's exactly what I want. You didn't happen to get a part # off it did you. I had a contact in Mexico that thought he could locate a NOS one if I could get him the part #. I'm not sure I could still get ahold of him but a part # would be one step closer to my goal. Thanks at least for the better pic as mine was on the car. Think you could get me a hookup on getting one????

I had measured breather port at air cleaner (stock air cleaner) it is 1/2 inch

but when I measured breather port at oil filler assy it is 3/4 inch

which one is correct?? 1/2 or 3/4 inch?

do I use wrong oil filler assy? I use oil filler assy without any tube into crankcase...

I found this oil bath air cleaner but it looks different than what I've seen before. It's a lot shorter. He says its for a Thing and the arm that goes to the carb looks right, but the body just looks different. Anybody know anything about this one? Does it use the same mounting bracket as the longer bodied one?

In this picture I am missing the large tube that brings air from under the lower tin. I don't know where to get this tube from. I am also missing (like the picture) the hose from the oil fill to the air cleaner. thanks!

Casey, that breather hose from the oil filler to the aircleaner has a 12mm ID, and FWIW, is the same size as the hose supplied with the Bugpack breather box kit. Rubber tubing with a 1/2" ID would probably work. Make sure you cut the aircleaner end at an angle so it doesn't "bottom out" and block the airflow when inserted into the port on the aircleaner.

As for the warm air "stove pipe", my Thing always ran fine without one, but you might be able to save a couple of bucks and use the 1968-1974 Bug part, 113119519G.

Somebody feel free to smack me down if that won't fit. Laughing

Hope this helps,
- Scott
