I was just wondering if its possible for the guts to be rotted out of these things. I am looking on ebay at them and most people dont know if theres works. Seems like most would be badly rusted internally if they are filled with water unless of couse they are aluminum or stainless. The slinging rusty water comment got me wondering. |

The interior of mine is in good shape. It appears that it is made
out of galvanized metal. No rust whatsoever. I used to run
crushed ice with just a bit of water in mine. As mentioned, it
got cold as one could get. I'm glad it has a rod one pulls to
close the forward vent door. It can be positioned full open
partially opened or closed. I removed the old aspen wrapping
that was encased on the squirrel cage and replaced it with a
fibrous material used in home swamp coolers called Dura Cool.
It helped keep the unit cooling longer. I also used two cap fulls
of white vinegar in the unit once a week to kill the mildew that
might build up and stink. The vinegar really worked great. _________________ Hmm, ruff. |

When installed and in a low humidity climate they function quite nicely. and having pop outs even helps more as long as you are above 40 MPH. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Here in Kansas those things are largely worthless in the summer due to the high humidity. You definitely do feel cooler, but you get out of the car with your clothes damp all over. Bleah.
In dry climates, though, I hear they actually work pretty well. |

Okay, I know some of you have serviced your coolers so how are you taking the thermadors apart? Are you prying of the end or both ends. If it is just one end is it the one that faces to the front of the vehicle? I got the rear side off but it is covered with tar with the center rod folded over.
I am really trying to be careful not to bend or dent and have decided to ask for help. Help!! Is there a certain trick?
Thanks |

the rear inner panel is sealed on, also has 3(?) screws. i scraped it out a bit then resorted to heating it until it fell out(actually had the whole thing apart so just set it on fire for a bit). I wasn't worried about the finish though as i powdercoated it after all was said and done. the front panel is spot welded on, you will have to drill out the welds if you wish to remove it. |
