What's the weirdest/ grossest/ coolest thing you've found...while cleaning out your newly acquired vehicle?
I was cleaning out the Doka today and I fully removed the passenger bench to cleanout behind it and I found about two dozen used toothpicks and lollipop sticks- YUCK!
My wife worked at a car rental outlet for years before we had kids and she has lots of good stories. Just some of the things found:
- a dead body in the trunk of returned car
- Incredibly large adult toy.
- bag of Cocaine
- renters of a cube van were complaining of a bad odour in the truck so the were switched into another unit the service reps tried cleaning and the smell wouldn't go way so they ended up sending to a local detailing shop. After a week of cleaning they started to take the truck apart.
You would not believe what the cause was. Check this link.

mmmm, no snakes, or bodies, but while working on my old 71' bus i found this fork under the seat and took a pic. the pic came out really cool. it looks like i took time to set it up and light it etc, but it's just me holding it with the pale blue bus behind it. it's not dead body/snake gross, but it was definitely the coolest pic i ever took of something funky i found in a veedub =)
as a side, i recently figured out that the drivers box in vanagons is a great place to look for treasures when you're at the pick-n-pull/pick-a-part. i scored some nice tools and even a decent pair of shades. i think the dismantlers don't know there is storage under there. |

In the dead 87 7-passenger van that I wound up trading for my current Westy, the driver's seat compartment was home to about 8 or 9 really nasty British porno magazines. All dated mid-90s or so. Good articles with some in-depth reporting. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

My Weekender had the standard VW Van Hemp related stickers all over the back and inside.
I left one;
"Isnt it time for another Magical Mystery tour"
Removed the ;
Hemp Nation
Arrive Stoned
One sticker was a large drawing of a burning joint....
I wonder if the cops notice the advertisement of what is probably inside.
I figured I would find some 'doobies', 'roaches' or other 'Got stoned and I missed it' stuff when I stripped the interior.
Found a nice little hash pipe with a 35mm film canister containing a few petrified black rocks of dehydrated hash inside.
Then there are treasure stories;
My Westy came with about 1000 aircraft grade, new zip ties of every size, along with everything you need to go camping, all packed away in big zip lock bags. |

How about this: My new wife a few years back found a Condom wrapper in my old 79 westy that was from me and an old girlfriend before my wife but my wife found it in the upper bunk. Boy that did not go over well on that camping trip. _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

first van:
lots of crazy writting on the inside of the van including "high water"-mark half way up the interior panel (I didn't want to know the story behind THAT), several references to gay porn, and a scribbled "got pot?" note.
Also found a condom, luckily still in the wrapper, and also a film canister of vaguely familiar smelling seeds. Hmmmmm....
current van:
original, never before mounted Cali plates, TONS of change all over the place (probably 20 to 50 bucks worth all told!), and a large knife stashed under the driver's seat that I nearly impaled myself on when I took the seat out the first time. _________________ previous:

My van was in great shape when I bought it so it wasn't until about wo months after that I decided to do a thorough cleanout...and learned that I had been driving around with a small bag of dope and a nice pewter hip-flask full of tequila under the passenger seat.
I could just imagine the traffic stop:
"Do you mind if we take a look through your vehicle sir?"
"Not at all, knock yourself out"
"Umm...would you like to tell me what this is sir?"
"Whoa, wait.....that's not mine!! I had no idea that was there! Really!!"
"Sure it isn't. Turn around and put your hands behind your head please..."

I was thoroughly disappointed in mine, nothing interesting or even weird. Just a neurotic squirrel, who must have found the meth stash, putting pecans everywhere! They are under seats, under all the camping fixtures, in the body members behind virtually every light. The van was almost a virtual rolling Stuckies Pecan Log Roll. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

I found this ford Granada Siku model car in one of my panels. (made in west germany)
I also found a recorder in the driver’s side door heater duct, which turns out is really called a fipple flute.

My Van's PO was a clean guy, as in so clean I've secretly - and affectionately - nicknamed him Felix Unger.
But at some point in Westy History one of those crappy men's travel roll on deodorants made its way under the driver's seat, and somehow got jammed in the swivel mechanism. It was a total nightmare to remove, because I tried to get it out without cracking the bottle open. Didn't want the van to smell like Brut* or something...
Nothing else exciting, but who knows what secrets these vehicles hold. Plenty of time and opportunity to discover treasures.
*Old Spice woulda been a different story! |

I found a CD from some local country rock band under the bench. Didn't really care for it.
About a year later I was at a concert and said band was the opening act. Turns out one of my buddies knew the singer from their home town and I mentioned to her how I found their CD. She asked me what my van looks like and of course there's only one Tiger Van. She said the van's P.O. took the band photos for the CD! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

Well it was not in my van but at my local pick-a-part my buddy and me were make fun of how cheap American car were and to prove it I decided rip the head light switch out of the dash of some Chevy van. To my surprise it came it came right out with no problem at all. What we found was what I think to be considered a one in a million chance, it was a small glass pipe and a HUGE bag of crystal meth He told me that I should take it to the gate and ask them how much for the bag and pipe and see if they would sell it. Yeah right no way in hell do I want to caught with that much dope on me. Anyways we ended up stepping on the bag and the pipe before anybody saw us. We still sometime joke about what if we did take it and had left it in my wife car by accident and she had gotten pull over with sack crystal and the pipe to match right next to her |

For the first month of owning my Westy I couldn’t figure out how oil was leaking down from above the rear cabinet door. At first I thought it had to do with the AC, but no it turned out to be an old box of raisins. They were in the small shelf/track that runs along the van above the kitchen cabinets and had slid all the way back, and were hiding in that small space under the top bunk, melting yuck! |

I purchased a 78 westy about 10 years ago from an elderly couple..they took beutiful care of the ride. But about a mnth later i'm out camping with my girlfriend. And to our horror we unearthed a dryed up tube of KY jelly under the lower mattress. Well the idea of geriatric sex occuring on this very spot killed the mood for that weekend.......... |
