Fat Chick Ghias are the 70-74 Ghias. They are considered as "fat chicks" because of the large tail lights, turn signals and bigger style Blade bumpers. I have one and I prefer it. Also, fat chick Ghias come with IRS transaxles which is a definite plus. _________________ Allen C.

Fat chicks are what folks who don't have one call them. The best looking, riding and driving ghia's are what folks who have one call them. It's pretty simple... |

I agree, I think the term is misused and unbefitting for the '70 and '71 models. (Even if the Samba dictionary says otherwise!) The '70s and '71s retain the '67> cockpit and bumpers, but have the larger wraparound lenses at the front and slightly larger lenses, with an integrated back-up light, at the the rear. (The "towel bars" were shortened on U.S. bumpers to accommodate the larger lenses.) The '72>'74 Ghias have beefier, bulkier (fatter?) bumpers - which offer more collision protection - and much larger rear lenses (which are far safer when driving, of course). But, some people find these changes to be less aesthetically appealing. It's all personal taste, of course.
In any case, as for the the early '70s models being categorized as "Fatchicks", I just don't know...I don't know if the wraparound lenses alone make that term completely appropriate. Perhaps full-figured, voluptuous, or buxom would be better. A "full-figured chick", for example.
Just noticed this in another thread - how timely!

You could almost split the "late" category into "fat" and "super fat". Some '70-'71 owners might be offended to be lumped in with us true fat chick owners. |

I do not consider my 1970 to be a fat chick either I actually, just as some of you, thought the "fat" came with the bolder bumbers. _________________ 1970 Karmann Ghia Coupe |

At one time, only Super Beetles were fat chicks.
It was in reference to the fatter front ends they have.
As time went on, it started to apply to any VW that
had the larger bumpers and larger taillights _________________ www.DaytonaWinterJam.com

I think of any ghia before they fixed the drooping headlight problem and finally splurged on enough plastic to make respectable taillights to be fat chicks.
also any ghia that has had more than three owners would be a slutty chick.
cabriolet is a topless chick.
So in effect by my definition you could very well be the owner of a fat slutty topless chick.
you could go as far as to call rust VD, vacuum leaks as sucking, and if its got more than 100,000 miles it "gets around"
So in conclusion, you may infact be driving a Fat slutty topless chick who gets around, has VD and sucks. _________________ 72 Ghia

I have argued against 70/71 models being called fat chicks for years. Then again, it's non-Ghia people who advocate this, so I know their opinion does not matter. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

any VW with 4-lug wheels a fatty.

With that definition, a was wondering that a 1967 KG with four lug pattern may be considered a Fat Chick? Henceforth, is there a need for the Fat chick term to be re-defined? Just asking, actually. _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;
