Ok, i went to Daytona this past weekend. 600+ miles round trip.

On the way back, about 140 miles from home, the tread pealed from the tire and the flap punched the battery try about 5 inches higher. Sad

I got a new tire installed, wallymart was nearby, but they couldn't balance the tire.

I got the bus rolling and all was good, untill i got home. Once i got off the freeway, i felt the shake. Starting off the line, the bus would shake violently. This will remain till i get to around 45mph then it calms down.

Now i know the first responce will be that the tire is not balanced.

But rolling at 1 to 5 mph, the tires unbalance would not be a factor here.

What should i check? What could be wrong?

Thanks,

Spanish Flea

check rim for damage
all the lugnuts torque
rear axle nuts torque
springplate bolts torque
check axle tube for being broken (rare but it happened to me)
check spring plate retainer cap bolts torque (another rare)
check for broken springs in all corners

you can balance the rear tire by putting it on the front. Jack up the front then and spin the tire, the heavy spot always settles low (use chalk on tire) then use small weights to balance tire until you can get the heavy spot stopping randomly instead of setting to the bottom.

FRONT: check wheel bearings and lugnuts, torques.

Well last night i took a look at everything. Removed the tire and looked. All looked well. No skuf marks on the spring plate or shocks, all the bolts are tight.

It was to late for a drive, so if it's not raining when i get home i'll go for another short drive to see if the shake is still there.

Looked at the body damage, and it's not as bad as i thought.

Time for new tires dude. Wide Whites Laughing

Put new tires on (you need them anyway) and get them all balanced out.
Whoever balances them can tell if your wheel is out of round.

PM me if you need anything else.

Good luck,
Tom

Try checking the other tires if any of them have a "separation", like a bubble on the thread. that would cause a low speed vibration. Try rubbing with your hand on the thread of the tire see if you can feel any lumps.

i agree, time for new tires if the other 3 are in the same condition as the one that detreaded. i have had that happen to me on 2 occasions. feels like the wheel is about to fall off. from now on i install new tires on any bus i plan to drive, for more than a few miles anyway. i would also suggest checking your other 3 tires for seperation. after one of mine seperated, 2 of the others showed signs of getting ready to do the same thing. be safe.

I have new tires on the way as i write this. Thanks.

The funny thing is the Driver Rear tire had a nail in it before the trip. I didn't have time to fix it. Honesty i thought it was that tire that let loose. lol.

But yeah, this morning i ordered new tires. Cant wait to get them.

I went and had the new tire balanced. Now i can get to troubleshooting the shake. It was raining all evening yesterday, bummer.

Got Towers, and FF GTG this weekend

you could have bent a stub axle or damaged a bearing for the stub. the bend could most likely be seen in drum runout the bearing most likley could be felt in drum play. bearings would be my bet as a bad bearing is usually worse at low speeds

I had the same shakes on my POS chrysler and the tires looked fine to me, lots of tread but a tire guy pointed the bubbles out to me with the car up on the lift. They were barely noticeable but definitely there. No more than 1/8' bump. New tires cured it.

The other night, tom and i started to troubleshoot what was going on. We started by checking the other tires, and sure enough the driver rear tire had a huge bulge in it. Yesterday i got a used tire put on in it's place and that has taken care of the shake.

I took pix of the tire and will post them when i can.

Thanks everyone for helping out.

Most steel belted tires can't be switched side to side. In otherwords, if they have been run on the passenger side and are rotating clockwise in the normal forward direction then are placed on the driver's side they rotate in a counter clockwise direction. The belts separate and bulge out air between the layers. Some newer radials are ok some are not.

I thought I had a serious problem with my '65 westy. Turned out that when I got new tires that solved it. One of the old ones had a tumor towards the inside of the bus where I couldn't see it.
