Alright I just read on another topic about gas smell in a 77 bus. So I started this topic about mine to see if others have had my problem.
When ever I fill up or I think sometimes when the tank is full and I turn, Mostly after I fill up and the tank is full, I get a bad gas smell in the inside of my 78 bus. Its not comming through the heater system because the big air tube running up to the front is removed right now do to other problems. I do know where the gas cap is, there is a rubber type material that connects the next pipe which goes down to the tank (I believe that is where it goes) has a crack in it. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what should I look for and do to fix this stuff.
Thanks James |

I had the same problem with my 74 bus and a 76 bus some years ago, there is a rubber elbow that connects the gas filler pipe to the body of your bus, this elbow is located behind the gas cap. if you remove the gas cap there is a metal flange with four sheet metal screws in it, this flange and the rubber elbow support the filler pipe when the rubber gets old and dries out and cracks it starts leaking especially with a full tank. there is a hose clamp you have to remove also, the clamp holds the rubber elbow to the filler pipe. most good veedub
shops should carry the elbow, they run about
$20 - $25. good luck. |

Do I have to remove the engine and get back in there to the tank to replace this rubber elbow? I took the gas cap flange thing off one day and saw the rubber elbow, but I can't see where to get to the clamp to remove and replace it? I was thinking I have to get to the tank to fix this problem.

You can access the filler pipe through that
round flat cover inside the engine compartment that is just forawrd of where the
FI computer plugs in. there is a second rubber hose just inside the access cover which ties the filler pipe to the tank, you can remove the filler pipe by loosening the
clamps on the second rubber hose. good luck |

Man that bottom and top hose was a pain to get to. I finally got it out and both were cracked a bit. I went to O'rielly's and got a piece of gas filler hose to replace the bottom one, but what places will have the elbow hose on top? The only place I saw so far is bus boys and I think they wanted something like 35 bucks for it if I read right. I'll be looking at other places but if you can send me to one that has it for 20 to 25 bucks that would help.

I never said it was easy but if you don't like the smell of gas every time you turn a corner it'something you gotta do. ok James I bought my seal locally here in New Mexico
it was $24.90 but I found one at wolfsburg west for $16.50 plus shipping of course. I've done some business with them and they are very prompt getting your stuff to you, so I'd recommend them. The part is called a
"filler neck hose" part #211201119 for type II 74-79 and they are in stock. Have fun. |
