There was a sticker on the left inside fender well with the paint code.

It's most likely gone.

If your tag is gone, this is one place to look to get an idea of the name of the paint color and its code:

look in the places that it's really hard to repaint and where the paint wouldn't fade as much like under the dash or in the boot to get an idea of what kind of color you should be looking for.

then go to wolfsburgwest.com and use their color charts (found on the bottom right hand side) to see what was offerred on your make and model. you should be able to narrow it down.

Glenn, am I not reading this thing right or does it only go up to '72?

I have a '74 that appears to originally have been a dark blue color and I'm trying to figure out what it was.

try wolfsburg wests color charts.
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/colors/colorchrt.cfm
they are a good place to start. then once you get an idea of what it might be, maybe Alaska Metallic Blue or Ontario Metallic Blue try doing a google search of "Alaska Metallic Blue Beetle" or something like that and see if pictures of other ones pop up that you can compare yours too. i figured out mine that way and then went to paintscratch.com and when you type in your make and model to order paint they can tell you whether that was really an option for your car or not. i also have a 74 and i don't see my color on that samba list either. that's how i figured out what mine is because that little paint sticker on mine is long gone too. good luck!
