I used to see these things all over the place but am having a hard time finding them anywhere now, even German eBay(mirror=spiegel).

The idea of making a pair has also crossed my mind a time or two. I was talking to my UPS driver and looked at the mirrors on the truck and concluded that they would work perfectly if chopped down and tweaked a little.

Tyvm vntgbus & 70coupyel .

$345. Ouch. I'd certainly be afraid to park anywhere in public.

This is a little more my style: a piece of 1/2" conduit, a bender, some UPS truck style mirror heads, some fancy angle brackets, powder coating and a handful of hardware. Probably under $100 for the set.

What I go through to save a buck...

I have an almost new pair. I can not get myself to install them for two reasons:

1. I have to drill holes in the van and what if I need to convert back?

2. If they need spare parts, where do you get them?

So for now, the sit wrapped up waiting for me to decide if I want to put on the even more expensive to repair electric ones I have or put those big truck ones on.

Drilling holes isn't too big of a deal for me. The last time I checked, decent doors aren't in short supply, usually even in your choice of colors, at least here in the Pacific Northwest, a.k.a. "the center of most things VW".

My main concern is how loud they are going to be on the freeway. Nothing annoys me more than those little whistling noises that you get from a mirror thats cocked at the perfectly wrong angle or a bad window seal. My Subaru and it's non-existent door frames has a problem with that.

Scoop on the LT mirrors from Van-Cafe. I emailed them to ask when they would be back in stock. Here's what Peter had to say:

Quote:
We have been working on trying to get more for a while and unfortunately I have no definitive eta. I have only gotten them one time - they were very popular, but my source from that time says he can't get them any more. I have been trying to get a new source but nothing definite yet.

I will add you to the list of people who have inquired about them so that I can email you when I do have some news on them.

1 euro=$1.267 as of today 4pm EST.

I've seen sets go for as little as €45 on ebay.de, ask about shipping to the US before bidding on anything, many people dont want to ship to the USA or it is €€€€€ ($$$$$ x 1.267). As the dollar gains ground on the euro importing parts is becoming a more viable option again.

Bernd Jeager has them for €84 each, also a great site to look at a lot of cool syncro/vanagon parts.

I bought a set from Busman last year and was really happy dealing with him. He takes pay-pal and DHL shipping. I had them in a week. He also sell replacement parts.

As for installing, I'd say go with thread-serts. I bought the tool from Harbor freight then bought the needed 6mm thread-serts on ebay. This way you can use screws from a junker Vanagon and all hardware matches.

As for making holes in your van, to each his own. I don't see it as much of an issue.

As far as I know they are no longer available new unless you find a vendor with old inventory. They do show up used from time to time but are not cheap. I have a set on my daily driver Syncro and do not get any noticable wind noise from them. I like them enough that I want some for our Westy Syncro too. The only real complaint that I have is they are not heated, not an issue for some but can be those of us in cold climates. They frost up at times. I have considered making a set, the toughest part will be the mount brackets, the plus side is that I could use heated mirrors.

I would imagine that you could get them from Bernd to your door for well under $300. I would just shoot him an email to find out the shipping cost. As the mirrors themselves will only cost you $213 (not cheap, but not horrible either)

Lars Neufer at Tristar Connection has them. He has a featured ad in the Vanagon parts section. I have ordered from him in the past and the parts I ordered came professionally packaged and arrived quickly.

I don't personally like those mirrors at all. I much prefer the sleekness of the power mirrors on late model vans. But if you gotta have em, it's probably worth getting some while there are still NOS sets out there.

I got a set from Lars, I had some shipping issues but he was a good guy who stood behind his sale and got me the replacement parts. Other than taking for ever due to shipping it all worked out fine.
I love the mirrors, so much better view, wind noise is a lot less and they look great. I would like to get another set to have for spare parts.
Tristar connection and the busman are your best bet. Its sounds like someones reproducing these again so maybe its just a matter of time before we can get them here in the states again.
