The old 1600DP would knock when I started it, but would calm down to a tick once the oil pressure would build. I testing for crankshaft end play and found it to be ~.120". It still ran good and pulled strong, but I know the end was near.

It looks like the flywheel has been rubbing on the bottom of the tranny . . .

This is a shot of the inside of the oil pump cover . . . NICE!!

It looks like there's been a little "fretting". The bearing number is imprinted into the case (backwards) . . .

I'll be cleaning the case and looking for cracks tomorrow.

The end result with be a 1776 / 110 cam / ported stock heads / full flow

I wish you the best of luck with your project Smile I'm also replacing a tired engine in my '66 bug. If your really lucky, the case will be machinable, mine wasn't.
