Just out of interest, why would you want to put 356 brakes onto your bus? I know they will be better than the standard brakes but it would be much cheaper to just go for a bay disc front end and will give you even better stopping than the 356 brakes. This way you don't ruin a perfectly good and hard to come by and expensive set of 356 drums by modifying them and you save money and you get even better brakes Very Happy . And you get to keep those rare 356 brakes for your future 356 restoration or sell them to someone else who needs them which will probably pay for your bay disc brake conversion Wink . You are the winner on all counts!

but if you have all your 356 projects ready and have also split window bus
awaiting for restore I prefer to do old school tune up from these time.
I have bus 1962 just used together with brakes from 1961 model B,it is very sexy Embarassed also 356 engine you need to put inside.

Thank You all for the update, it has been a long time already I know, but the plans went into the freezer untill now (winter is coming up here in Belgium). Is there something I need to know before I would start. For example another thing that came up in my mind:

Should I use A brakes together with the old style busbeam
Should I use B brakes together with the busbeam from a 66?
Or could I swap among each other?

I have a '57 bus but I also have a later style beam available...

I think the old beams will work together withe Porsche A or B brakes without any modifications, the 1966 are bigger and have another diameter of teh beams, there you neeed bushing modifications.

also it works on the rears Wink

ok im curious what are the difference between finned and smooth drums? Are they progressive refinements or just a preference of style (A or B)? Was it just an option at the dealership?

which sets are desirable now? smooth or finned?

I have a complete set of 356 finned drums off a '57 356 as i was told. Along with matching 57 lemmerz rims (5) they all will be mounted on my 57 rhd. heres a picture of the drums- i intend to polish the drums and leave og paint on the wheels & Run them w/out hubcaps.

Also id like to know more about FAT CITY GERMAN MOTORING in seattle, WA? anyone with info or history? I have their old shop/ex-rally car and am trying to piece together history on the car.
Many thanks in advance

I could be wrong...But I believe your finned drums are B drums. My '58 coupe has the smooth drum with a couple of fins running the circumference of the drum. Not sure why anyone would upgrade to B drums...

IMO, I wouldn't upgrade to finned if I had a 356A. However, for a VW the finned B brakes look better and perform better.

Can you guess what's going on my car? Wink

i dont have the pictures of the car in its former condition so maybe you could ask someone who worked there for many years if there was any oval ragtop that they used to have as a shop/rally car? It used to have an okrasa and motometer rally gauges, 356 drums and other stuff. polar silver originally with blue interior. If theres pictures of it in their shop office that would be but a wishful thinking? Wink

the drums- A or B? so its an upgrade or smooth drums are better? im not sure what the difference are? just looks or performance? Im not a 356 expert so what are differences between 356A and 356B?

joe h, looks like we have same drums or am I blind? looks nice! what car are they going on?

A drums have grooves, B drums are finned. They weren't available at the same time, A came on the older cars, B was the next/newer drum, and C was disc

They will be going on my "vintage speed" '54. 356 wheels and brakes, Okrasa power, and other speed accessories. I've now collected everything I need for it so now the fun begins.

I will drop by Fat City sometime and ask around. That sounds like a very cool car. Take some pics!
