So I've been looking at buying a '71 Double Cab owned by a friend, and I'm leaning toward purchasing the little devil, but I needed a fact check from some knowledgable folks.
I'm getting the following two statements, and I just need to see if they match up as problem and symptom:
Statement #1: It's got a leaky push rod tube seal.
Statement #2: It runs great, but it smokes like crazy.
Is #2 (smoking like crazy) likely to be caused, as my buddy claims, by #1 (leaking push rod tube)? Should I be looking for an additional problem? Let me add that I am questioning this guy's knowledge, but not his honesty, and he's giving me a good deal, problems or no. Thanks for any help. |

If it is smoking out of the exhaust then no the pushrod tube leak in not the cause...
More than likely bad rings or valve guides...
If smoke is coming OFF THE exhaust under the engine ect. then it is an external (tube) leak... no doubt |

A '71 Double Cab? Buy it, even if it smokes.
Don't even hesitate. |

Smoke from a pushrod tube leak certainly wouldn't screw the deal, but if there's a more serious problem I might have to pass. I don't have the resources or the space for major engine work. If I don't want it, I'll offer to help him sell it, though, so maybe somebody here will get lucky.
On another note, was I reading right when I saw that a '71 Type 2 came stock with a 1600 dual port? |

Oh, there's plenty of rust & rot, no worries there. If this thing was pristine, it would be way out of my price range. The important thing for me is that I'm getting a good driver with no major mechanical problems (assuming statements 1 and 2 above all work out as discussed). I can live with some rust long enough to stop its spreading, and fix up the cosmetic implications as I have the time and money.
Am I a sucker? Maybe. But I'm going to be a sucker with a '71 DC. |

I wouldn't call my self a sucker, I would call the other guy a jerk for selling it!!!
Good luck with it. I am redoing 68 single now
Restored a 72 westy over the last 3 years and it was a blast ( alot of money ) but still a blast. Just take your time |

OK, so I went and had a look, and I wasn't kidding about the rust & rot. Ouch. I don't know if I can swing it. There's a hell of a lot of metal that will have to be replaced.
To be fair, the guy I'm buying it from is selling it for the price he bought it for a short time ago, and he has put a lot of money into the engine, rewired the whole damn thing, installed new shocks, and is throwing a bunch of parts into the deal. He's not being a jerk, he just inherited the results of the Previous Previous Owner's sloppiness.
Anyway, he's asking $1500. I guess I just have to decide if I think it's worth it. What do you think? |
