shift rod bushing in a 58 bug?

went to put a new shift rod bushing in my 58 bug. took the shifter out and do not see a bushing in there. almost no clearance where the rod goes through the the bracket and the rod is way thicker than the new bushing.

A 1958 pan did not use a shift rod bushing.

From what I understand some of the earlier models did not/might not have one.

Here is the set-up for my 58. No bushing. The "shift rod guide" helps keep it in place Wink
