I have an 85 1.9 with 4 speed. The engine runs great except for two problems which are probably related.

1. This thing has **no umph** starting from a stop. In fact, I often have to press the gas down and hold it for the engine to spin up before letting out the clutch. There are times when I have forgotten to do this, have pulled out into traffic and had to get to the side of the road to avoid being hit.

2. It will do the same thing after coasting down a hill. There is a hill several miles long that I take a couple of times a week. The engine will give no throttle response at all for perhaps 10 to 20 seconds after coming off that hill.

The engine never dies. It just has no power.

Any ideas?

Check the timing. Connect a decent timing light and verify the distributors ability to advance it's timing to it's full advance up to about 3000 RPM.

I would suspect your Throttle Switches are sticking in the closed position. The engine thinks it is at idle until they release. THe 85 has a low switch and a high switch, your offending one would be the low switch. Put a meter on it (it is on the throttle body) and see if its is gummy and releasing late. It really makes the engine into a gutless wonder when it is closed.
