My favorite van upgrades, tint, floormats, shocks, springs, tires, headlights, house battery, house heat, gear hammock, cup holders

1. Limo tint. My cali Van has untinted driver passenger windows.. When driving, I like the view better than with the full tinted NM van.. but when parked.. with a sunscreen on front, and full tint.. it is very private (I still use curtains to block streetlights when urban camping).

2. New shocks, bilsteins on the 85 2wd westy. OME shocks and Syncro.org springs on the 86 Syncro westy.

3. Tires.. Michellin Agilis on the 2wd, BFG AT's on the Syncro

4. Headlight relays, bulbs, and the SA grille for the syncro. Headlight relays, bulbs, and Hella round lenses for the 85 westy.

5. Rubber floormats front and rear, from van-cafe or GW

6. Odyssey 1200 House battery, GW house battery solenoid kit and instructions for wiring cig lighter to house battery. With inverter, to charge computer, shaver, cell phone..

6. Propex House heater.

7. Gear hammock http://tinyurl.com/2qugzt

8. Cupholders (not the ones that open up and dump your drink) http://tinyurl.com/2qugzt Two screwed into passenger seat base opposite parking brake, one by rear seat above ashtray on passenger side.)

wishlist
3 window canvas
Closet door mod so it opens without moving table.

up here in the muddy rain coast of BC
the best thing we added to our syncro was front wheel mud flaps
ours are made from light weight conveyor belting and fit the whole wheel well - large "fender"washers and bots to hold them on.
Sure keeps most of the crapola out of the sliding door.

We also have a oil pressure gauge - volt meter- huge vacuum gauge

We went for the functionable (read funky) look
the oil pressure and volt gauges are from a jyToyota PU.
The Vacuum gauge was built in 1938 and used in the steam plant that I helped dismantle.
I have a 1/4"shop air hose zap strapped under and back to the FPR on the motor where I Tee'd
we try to run at 10 inches of mercury
17 to 22 inches at 1000rpm near sea level -
this 2.1L wasserboxer is strong motor everything except hot oil pressure is good
it has to be the fastest motor to start that I've ever had-
Just a couple of flips with the starter and it is running in all types of weather

The mud flaps are from the same place the vacuum gauge came from.
not fancy but very good for keeping the mud out
snowed like mad a couple of nights ago and it was no problem for syncro da Dr. Mayo in low low

I've enjoyed this old thread and though it may be time to update it a bit. I'd be interested to hear of some fresh ideas, and more importantly, see some photos.

I've recently added a few mods to my 85...

- The flip down frig door mod to access the controls without releasing the cold
- Made a bracket out of 4" mending plate, rare earth magnets, and heat shrink tubing and mounted on the wall next to the rear table. The resulting magnetic latch is strong enough to keep table from swinging out.
- More sound deadening
- Jack Bombay's pop top lift shocks
- And numerous others, too long to list here... Shocked

kinda boring, but best value modification I made was upgrading to the high power lights. I think I paid about $80 at gowesty. It made a huge, huge difference, more so than any other modification. Easy to do also.

Okay, I've posted this before, but I'll put it here because I am enjoying it so much. The smaller diameter steering wheel from a GTI has been nice. I've also added gauges, oil temp, oil pressure, and vac/boost for my 1.8T. I'm also enjoying the rear facing jump seat, saves mucho space over the metal box seat I had there before.

Big improvement for less than $100 with a big payoff every time I drive it is the installation of Eurovan seats in the Westy. These seats came from a 150K mile EV, twice the miles of my van and they're still at least twice as comfy as the stock seats. Highly recommended and an easy upgrade.

I did Sodo's table extension and we love it. Saying that, have seen table extension done with tube on outside of table leg rather then inside. Not saying one is better then other, but thought it was interesting way of doing it. http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=30514
