I have seen rear bumper splash pans a few times in the classifieds. A few questions came to mind.
Does anyone know why these were sold and to what busses they were fitted? As factory or deal option? What is there purpose? Simply preventing your bumper from being filled with road debris?

The splash pans were on bay and split busses. In addition to what their name implies, they stiffen the wrap around portion of the bumper.
There are slight differences between the two:
The one on the top is a Bay passenger side splash pan, and the one on the bottom is a Split passenger side splash pan. The mounting points are similiar. The Bay version has elongated holes allowing for adjustment. The Split version's side bracket is above and below the pan itself. Also notice the cutout for the bumper bracket is larger on the split version.
I am guessing they were factory installed.

Factory standard on all type 2's until 72, I wish my 72 had come with them, the sandblasted area just above the bumper on the rear end of an otherwise great OG paintjob sucks.

You mean 68-72 right
Or do they have these for 73-79 bumpers

| busdaddy, check the lower outer corner to see if you have a bulge with a hole there. If so you are missing the splash guards that came on 72 bays, and ended with the intro of the 73 bays. If you do not have the bulge, then somewhere in history your panels have been modified. Peace, |

I have two rear bumpers, both from 1968 busses, which have this type of support rather than the splash pans.
Is this unusual? |

Somewhat, that's what's on my 72 and from the sandblasting on the corner paint and OG one owner unmolestedness of the rest of the bus I'm confident they were there from new or very close to it, no marks on the rear brackets where the pans would have been bolted either. That's the same bracket that's welded to the front ends of the pans, just loose.

If the pans are missing rocks bounce off the inside of the bumper and sandblast the back of the bus below the tail lights, if the brackets are missing the ends of the bumper wiggle up and down and eventually crack the bumper near the rear mounts.

I ran mine without for 6 months till I found them in the parts pile from PO. bumper used to be a noodle. now you can stand on bumper. big difference, no longer vibrates up and down several inches at idle. I would not run without them, even if I had to fab some kind of brace. to me the bumper stiffening is more important than the splash guard feature. |

Anyone know if the 72 splash pans are a one year only thing like the brackets and bumper? I have a 72 bumper with the correct early bumper brackets fitted to my 70 (had to re drill bumper obviously). The splash pans that came with the bumper don't seem to line up correctly. Do I need 68-71 pans?

Yes, 72 pans are shorter to work with the wider frame rails, they have an oval depression over the bumper bracket if you want to spot the difference easily.
