Hello,
Is it possible to put a Judson Supercharger on 55 convertible ?
I don't know if it's possible cause the rear hood is different (behind the two air intake vents).
Thank you in advance |

I have seen Judson's installed on early cabrios but it required metal to be taken out of the air filter or deck lid vents.

I would say "don't do it", very expensive convertible only W-deck lid
is not worth chopping.W conv deck lid rain catcher are non-removable.
we all know Conv W deck lid is much more expensive than Judson kit.
another issue is not just a deck lid but license plate light (threaded stud)
must be grind off about 3mm. otherewise judson pulley might hit.
we went far as grind few mm off the judson air cleaner.
here is our convertible with Judson supercharger, we didn't like Judson.
so now sports a OMT built Auto Teknik motor & W-conv deck lid.

I will post after photo.

Yes, they are removeable. All you need to do is to drill out the spot welds holding it on. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Okay wiseguy drill out the spot weld will remove it.
I want to see you do it on your W Convertible deck lid.
will personally come over to observe it.
can you take it off without drill the hole on the actual deck lid ?
or require additional welding to cover the hole.
is it worth taking it off ? |

Yeah, I'm a wise guy. Check out most of the high-performance VW enthusiasts running a convertible W lid on their cars, they all have the rain catches removed. Rob "Dr Decklid" La Grange removes the trays all the time. Check out his web site at: www.sandiegovwparts.com maybe you're just too cheap, scared or both to attempt it yourself.
As for "is it worth it?" Ask the person who wants to have it done. If they want it done, it's for a purpose. Maybe to clear the larger than stock 48IDA velocity stacks for a motor that is substantially larger than a 25 or 36hp motor. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

And if you don't like it, so why you have a Judson supercharger in your convertible ?

Roy, that convertible W decklid, looks vaguely familiar...
I had the rain catchers removed by the aforementioned "Dr. Decklid" for my Oval with IDAs, tall manifoilds, air cleaners, no cutting of the body, and no popping open of the decklid, either top OR bottom, and I have also seen him take them out to repair the lid, and when he was done, spot-weld it back in, and you would never know it had been removed, for any reason, when he was done.
Roy, if you want Rob's e-mail or phone number, PM me, and I'll get it to you. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

You're vert lid can't be worth that much. Look at all those non-factory holes on the side of the rain catch. I know those aren't stock. It'll be easier having Rob re-install a rain catch that having those things patched up. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Thanks for the kind comment, Glenn, Johnny I will see you at Pomona.
I admit Scare to cut the rain catcher on W deck lid.
but, far as cheap I disagree because changed the motor just for the deck lid. (as shown on the above photo)
cheap guy will butch the rain catcher.
Thanks Dave but while back you already introduced Dr.Deck Lid.
recalled he was former rock star.saw 67 convertible deck lid
created by him and it was amazing work.
JP38 will PM you.
no intention to start the stock vs Custom thread.(beacuse never ending) |

That's right, Roy, I DID introduce you to "Dr. Decklid, the former bass player for Ted Nugent... I forgot, senility and all that carb cleaner must be taking it's toll on me
BTW, if the holes in the side of that decklid bother you at all, I had spoken with Rob before, and he said he could remove the rain catch, make plugs for the holes, weld them in, and metal-finish it on BOTH sides, so you would never, ever, know they were there. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

Thanks Dave
The convertible will be "weekend driver" and no intentions to show again.
therefore, the holes on the side doesn't bother me a bit.
very busy restoring the split window & the split windshield (pre A)
as always working on our car is most relaxing and temporary escape from
reality. I do better on wrenches than a key board that's why less than 100 posts in last 5years.

I didn't want to cut open a perfectly good newly painted 58 Ghia engine lid, but I cut anyway.
Since then, I took the Judson off as well and just left the 36hp engine. It was just easier and less worries for what is now a weekend driver as well. I don't really miss the hp.
