I have a 64 L-456 Rubin Red Kombi that I have never seen another like. It was ordered with popouts, no middle seat, and a tourist delivery. Only the inner cab is still factory paint. I would sure like to see pics. Isnt a big hatch Ruby Red Kombi only offered in 64? Will have pic tomorrow.

according to
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/colorstype2.php
Ruby Red was available on '62 through '64 commercial model type 2s.
It seems the Ruby Red is a fairly unusual color, however. It was just not used that often.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=517558
This is a 63 DD Panel in the same color, 98% original paint afaik (minor touch up in a few places).
The dash is really nice:

The pictures give the red a slightly differnt shade than in real life, of course.

Sounds like a neat bus. No pop outs at all?

Its not original paint, but a pretty good match for Ruby Red, for your viewing pleasure:

Only the one Kombi and it was a 63 small hatch. I guess I will be more specific and ask for pics of a 64 only Kombi in Rubin. Seeing all these other cousins to the Kombi is sweet, but I want to see the exact same as I have. I have not seen one ever. The other oddity according to the plate is M-374? It also had a 1500 option on the M codes but I thought all 64 on up no longer had the 40 hp.

This bus actually "is" a Kombi. Westfalia used Kombis to build campers.
So really vwbusbusvw is correct...it is a Kombi and Rubin as well.
But, I know what you mean a plain jane kombi in ruby red.
Did you search the gallery?
Do you have pics of yours?

Click the "Img" button in the Reply menu, find desired image ONLINE (you first must upload photo to the web if it exists only on your PC), copy and paste http from the browser window immediately after the "" now. Type in text and hit the "preview" button to make sure that the image appears in your post, then send... I hope this helps, I want to see the Rubin. Upload your pix to the Gallery and place them in the appropriate catagories so the reast of us can find the in the search options. Thanx

were the popouts on that red 63 westy og foward windows only like in the pic?

I have m-216. What is with the 63 Westy's popouts? Front opens wrong way? There are pics in the gallery thanks to Everett. Someone can bring them to this thread. I am not the greatest computer guy.

the 1500 was optional in the USA in '63 and standard in '64. it was optional everywhere else starting in '63. the M-216 code was not used in the USA, as the engine option was bundled into the USA spec code for the '63 models.

flipseat westies have a different popout arangement. that popout arangement is flipseat only.

Ruby Red was a good color used on 356 Porsches for several years right in this same time period. Perhaps 1957-1965. So I'm not surprised it became available on the VW line as well. Great color.

As Lind mentioned yes that is the flipseat only design.
One window on driver side in the #1 spot and opens rearward.
The other side had only one pop out as well but in the #3 spot and
also opened rearward.

BTW the westy is a `62...thick doglegs and early rear wheel wells.
I think `63 buses look like they are wearing floods....

Isn't the flipseat above a 63? Look at the rear hatch as it has a recess behind the t-handle. Maybe very early 63/ late 62? Or is the hatch totally wrong for that bus? I hope it has the correct hatch because that Westy is sweet.

Nope, that is my bus...it is an April `62 build and the hatch is original to the bus. If you do a search on the forums there is several threads discussing that half moon on the rear hatch. Seems it has been seen off and on early as `60 ish. The early style doglegs and rear wheel arches with big tailights are a tell tale trait of `62 only.
