I have a 1835cc engine in my 73'bus,just started to rebuild it.The only thing wrong was the rings and heads were cracked. My question is the ports are 40x32,do I have to have heads with the same size ports or what is the only necessity for getting used ones off of someone.Someone told me I could even use heads off a 1600 engine? |

Sounds like you have a type 1 Beetle engine in your type IV bus. I don't recognize your valve sizes as being type IV unless they have been modified. If you have a type 1 engine then heads from a 1600 would work as they are type 1 heads, but they would have to be cut for the larger pistons and cylinders of the 1835. An 1835 case has already been cut larger than stock so you will not be able to go back to a stock 1600 even if you wanted to. The 1835 is a popular type 1 engine so this is probably what you have. With regards to keeping the same port/valve sizes you don't have to replace them with identical, but I'm certain somebody in the Bug, Super Beetle, or Split Bus forums could give you more information on the 1835 engine. As far as I know the 40x32 valves could be the best or worst combination, but again the other forums will give you more info. Good luck. |
