The manuals and R&D's page all say clearance on front wheel bearings at
"just loosen the nut 'til the washer moves". Seems like there should be a more accurate way. My contacts say "you'll know it when you feel it". Grrrrrrrrreat.
Should this be checked after 100 mi. or so? This is on a '65 with roller bearings and locknuts.

Yeah, it's really that easy. The washer should just be able to be moved. That way you know the bearing isn't under any undue pressure. If it sets your mind at ease, go ahead and check it every so often, but I doubt there'll be a problem.

Ball bearings can be tightned till the washer dosn't move but roller bearings need a little play.
The best way to adjust your front roller bearings is to jack up the car put a jackstand under your side of the axle, sit on the ground with your legs on either side of the tire, loosen the locknut/s, pinchbolt, then back them off a bit, then tighten till firm but not too tight, rotate the tire, loosen & back off the locking device's 1/18 turn and grab the tire on the top and the bottom. If you feel a little play top to bottom and I do mean a little play, you should be ok to tighten the retainers. Check again for that play and if it stayed the same then you are good to go. I personally have worked on hundreds of Bugs and used the process I just described but I did it on a lift while standing. I have Never checked if the washer was moveable.
On a 65 with the Linkpin Beam make sure that it's not your Linkpins that are giving you that play. Feeling the right play is a subtle thing.

It's always a good idea to check them again after a hundred miles or so. Sometimes the race just wasn't home all the way in the drum and after things have been run a while, they settle in. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Went through the process several times and now I can actually "know it when I feel it" I guess there's some things that measurement and technology just can't trump.
