it's about 3 hours south of Naperville. We used to live in Lisle, but decided to move back home to have kids. |

Greetings from frigid, salt-encrusted, snow-covered South-East Michigan.....wait, the weather just changed again. Now it's 43 and everything is melting. Oh well.
I have one Thing now, a '73 with '74 air scoops on the sides. No windshield, no top, no frame, no side curtains. Pretty rusty. Wrong engine. Front shock towers rusted away, floor pans are shot. No seats either, front or back. Nicknamed "Lucky". Guess it's not really much of a Thing, but I paid only a few hundred $$ for it. It's one of those cheap finds that will end up costing me thousands. Had another Thing 30 years ago, loved it, but it was determined to return to the rusty soil whence it came.
I always see a Thing or two at the local VW shows around here, so there's several around the area. They'll crawl out of winter hibernation around May. |

There's been one for sale in the Twin Cities for about a year. I think it was in the classifieds here for a time. Not sure if the guy still has it, but I'll be driving by on my way home - I'll see if it's in his yard. |

There is now one less thing in Illinois.
I owned mine there for the last 12 years. Now she is my daily driver here in the Florida Keys.
80 degrees with the top down in January! |

Chris,
Hey, so you made it down to Paradise finally, eh?
I remember you talking on Topica about moving there, but where having trouble selling property in IL as I recall.
I also recall you were going to live on a boat.....is that right?
I've got a good friend I helped build a house for on Cudjoe at the 22 Mile Marker. He and his brother are down there right now as a matter of fact.
Between the two of them they own three Things here I work on occassionly.
They would get a real kick out of someone pulling up in the drive with a Thing.
If you are headed to K.W. in the next few days and are interested in stopping there for a few minutes, PM or email me and I'll send you the address.

So I counted 5 Things in Iowa including mine. I was wondering do any of you have personalized plates and what they say so I can be sure I get the ones I ordered _________________ 73 THING

I thought about it, but went for the DNR plates instead. I know Towel Rail has TYPE 181, but I don't know if he's going to keep them up now that it's gone under the knife. I don't know about anyone else. I saw an orange one in Okoboji last summer, but I don't remember whether it had special plates or not. _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

For those of us who store them for the winter, how long until you bring yours out? My battery is on the trickle charger right now, but the warm weather appears to be only teasing us. _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

Northwest Iowa has several Things running around: Okoboji, Spencer, Ruthven and Emmetsburg are all infected with at least one! |

I was going to bring mine up to Okoboji last summer, but it started overheating, so I had to turn around. It's been through a thorough carb rebuild and major tuneup, so it should be ready for this summer. I'm hoping to drive it up there on random weekends in late July and August. Keep an eye out for me! _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

Mid to late July there has been a VW show hosted by the "Java Joint" in Okoboji. I see the business has moved since last year, so I don't know if it will happen again this summer. |

I don't know about the Des Moines area (that's where my Thing was until my Dad sold it to me a couple of years ago), but for anyone else along the Mississippi, here's a site to check out:
