Try these guys- www.jameco.com
Remember that an LED requires a series resistor to keep it from burning out instantly. Some math required. _________________ Current fleet: Vanagons, two '88 GLs and an 89 Bluestar. Beetles, '63, '64, '72 convertible. Plus, four Subarus and three Prius. Too many cars. |

Try an outfit like this one: http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm
or one of the many others that you can find on the Web (I don't have any personal experience with or financial interest in this retailer). The lights they sell already have the dropping resistors and standard bases, so if you can find what you need you don't have to mess around trying to adapt an off-the-shelf LED and dropping resistor. _________________ 1988 Wolfsburg Edition, 2001 Subaru EJ251 |

I did this recently using blue leds from superbrightleds.com. You have to remove the bulb from their base and install it into the vw base, which is fairly easy but you have to be careful as the led legs which have a transistor attached are slightly delicate (I broke one so you might want to order a couple of extras, not very expensive) the lights look killer, they dim, and a huge energy savings. The light in the heater controls is a different story, a real pain. I had to modify a different led into the vw base by cutting the plastic base and soldering the led in, but I managed to break one of those also and then cracked the plastic of the heater faceplate in the process. I took pic's of all this to do a write up but haven't had time yet, I'll try to get them posted. |

For the instrument lighting in the dash I used superbright led's B8.5D Instrument cluster led bulb. These are a pretty straightforward affair to change out from the base they come with to the VW base. The light I used for the heater control panel is WLED 1-Led Bulb. This one takes some modification to make it work and you have to solder the led legs into the holder where you don't have to do that with the dash lights. Let me know if you have any other questions

The leds from superbrightleds work great. I tried the blue and the UV and white color. The uv look cooler but are a little dark for me. I think the UV would work best with the white face gages. White was a little bright for me. Blue is cool. I also put a blue DOME light up front and white in back.
Iv change all the back lights with white and added a back light to the headlight switch.(the rocker part from a 91 jetta is the same except the light picture lets light thur, just remove the green film)
oh ya dont forget the license lights (looks like a beemer) |

luvdavdhbs (sp?) did some fun things with cluster lighting. I believe you can find his thread via the Best Stickies. Click on the Best Threads in my signature below. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I was wondering if you could post those photos of the heater control panel MOD you did for the LED. I just ordered the LED's and will be attempting the same MOD. I am going to try the amber color in the instrument cluster, i also ordered the blue ones too. _________________ 84 Westy |

Is that a Lit Headlight switch? I would love to do that... or at least add it to the list of mods I want to do. _________________ Any opinions stated here are my own, otherwise someone else would have said them. |
