|
|
We've got a velvet 65 that's in for repaint, but we'd like to know what it's going to look like with fresh paint.
Searching here gave us many velvet busses but they all look so different, some have a nice tint and some are just so dark.
Anyone know what correct painted velvet looks like? Is it very dark?
Here some I believe are velvet (cummulus or blue white doesn't matter on top)
I really like the glossy tint on that last one actually.
Any thoughts? |

This looks closest to VG. It is more of an olive colour than you might expect.
The colour darkened with age, so og paint will look darker now that t is 40+ years old.
Engine compartment paint will give you a better idea than outside paint.
The PPG Velvet Green also darkens. The paint on this^^^ bus is about 9 years old in this pic, and is darker than when it was applied. I was very happy with the color match, it blended into the green on the inside of the front door perfectly. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Here's my L512 Velvet, L221 Stone Gray '66. First, I'm not a paint guy, but I know that it is a PPG 2 stage. I gave him the codes for the stock colors and this is how it turned out.

Then again, it's really hard to tell shades of color on a computer monitor. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

this is an original velve green, all I can say is that the car at the time of picture wasn't polished or waxed for a while and it was a cloudy day, I should have at least one side polished/waxed by this sunday and if it's sunny I'll take more pics to see if it may look a bit lighter/shinier

ok thanks!
Mine still has one side OG paint but that turned pretty light right now.
I like it, but I'm afraid the new paintjob would give a dark effect.
Too bad we can never see what a brand new velvet bus looked like in the '60s. Any color pictures from those days would have lost there color anyways, just like the busses
If anyone has nice velvet bus pictures, please post them for me |

my '66 DC .....
original paint (obviously not cleaned/polished up or even washed)
An interior shot (unfaded but still not too great)
The interior paint is in great shape. In the daylight it looks very similar to the OG paint bus posted by thomasz above.

Three shots of the same original paint bus.
Last I heard, this bus was to be repainted in the UK, if you can believe the assininity.

My 65 parts bus.
Velvet Green and Blue White is certainly my favorite late bus colour combo.
