|
|
60 DC has a stock 1600 DP stock exaust. 30/31 pic carb. Tuesday morning I get into my DC to go to work. its a bit chilly about 50 degrees. Engine warms up I start driving and I hear a weird sound from the engine. The noise sounds like I have a playing card attached to a bike wheel. like a slapping sound and it s more pronounced when i hit the gas. I stopped and looked inside the engine maybe something was hitting the pulley belt. nothing. THere s no loss of power. just that slapping sound also sounds metallic. havent checked the valves yet. I dont think its an exuast leak. any ideas? _________________ Just Cruzin Sur Califas VW Car Club est♤1998 |

I'm no expert but I'm guessing the spike during cold running has everything to do with the roofing tar(20-50) in the crankcase. |

Start with the little things like something stuck in the fan, or Gen/alt bearings, check for a rocker shaft problem like a broken clip. Could this be coming from the bell housing, or something stuck behind the crank pulley?
or as said rod knock?
Hope you find it's a simple thing. |

Oh Oh.. I hat the same problem before. The screw that held the air cleaner on came loose and the nut that held the screw on fell into the motor. I removed the head and there ws a lort of surface damnage to the aluminum but I reassembled and it ran ok... |

the way he described it, it's more of a ticking sound, right? Every rod I've heard knocking made more of a dull thud sound. _________________ 71 Bay (1776 in process)

I'll guess exhaust leak or detonation
Tune up, tighten up and check timing.

Simple tool to isolate the sound. Take a 2 foot piece of rubber hose and put one end on your ear and the other place on different places on the engine and fan housing. Where it is the loudest, that is where the sound is coming from. |
A mechanics stethoscope only costs a few bucks and they work great. _________________ 74 Fatty(unofficial Richmond County pursuit vehicle)

take the fan belt off and start it back up. if the sound is gone, you've narrowed it to the fan or alt/gen. _________________ Tehachapi, CA

I've had the exact same thing happen to me...
Pull off your fuel pump and take a look at the pushrod.
I'd be willing to bet that its bent. I've gone through two
of them. The bad part is that once they bend, it shatters
the plastic guide, and all the pcs. end up in the bottom
of your case.

(By the way, I switched to an electric fuel pump.) |

I still think it is the nut in the cylinder. It sounds exactly like he described. A buzzing sound like the card in the bike spokes. |

get a magnet pick up tool. remove the spark plugs and bend the shaft of the pick up tool to go down. Start sweeping. it should pick up something is there is something. I know i dropped a nut down the intake when removing the weber IDF. I did not know where it went . I checked with the magnet and found it in the cylinder before any damage could happen. _________________ Seabee turbo buggy build

Weight guessing is one of my favorite past times I place my money on the exhaust leak. They have a way of sounding metalic. Rod knock sounds more like a ball ping hammer on a vise than a playing card in a spoke. Thud |

Sudwinkle,
thanks for that link. First time I've seen that one. Now I've got to learn how to repair a squeaking distributor shaft. I heard it for the first time lastnight. Maybe its in John's book. |

I had a noise like that not too long ago, ended up being a loose head. |
