:: stock suspension front and back.
:: ubiquitous nankang 165s all around.
:: inexpensive stock-ish slotted 4.5in mangel rims with the hubcap clips machined off and powdercoated "porsche silver"
:: porsche-B drums.
--
pix prior to porsche brake install
if i were to do it again, i'd get 5.5in rims of the same design so i could run a wider tire. the front also needs to be lowered a bit, but that's a later project. |

I was thinking of painting my 61 ragtop the same color as yours, already have the brm's. I'm running 145's up front and 165's in back but my only problem is I got the AC Industries disc brake kit up front and the center caps to the brm's won't sit flush and so they fall off, mainly on drivers side due to the speedo cable. Any ideas? |

Front:
3.5 narrowed beam
2.5 CB spindles
Avis style adjusters
Stock brakes
Stock wheels with stainless trim rings
135/80-15 Space saver tires (just to get it rolling, i'm NOT driving on these!)
Rear:
1 outer click
Stock brakes
Stock wheels with stainless trim rings
205/65-15 tires
No engine or trans so its not the final ride heigth.
Can go down 2 more "clicks" on the adjusters.
Switching to CB 5x130 disc on front, Gas Burners, and 145-15 front - 205/70-15 rear, i'll post pics along the way. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exist and make it better. If it doesn't exist, create it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough."

1966
Front:
2" CB Ball Joint Beam .... no other mods
Stock wheels w/ 165's
Rear:
Stock height
Stock wheels w/165's
I have very little space left, maybe an 1/8 of an inch between
the inner fender and the shocktower.
I don't understand how people are installing up to a 4" beam without
modifications. |

FRONT
4" beam with Airkeld dropped spindles
145's on stock smoothie
REAR
6 inner splines down and 5 outer splines back up to get it where I wanted. The typical 2 outer would have been just a bit too low for me.
165's on stock _________________ 1970 Lotus White Panel

If your low and you dont like your Nankang 135s. GO Continental 145/65s I thought it would be ok.. But they are awesome tires that are cheaper, lower, and a better brand than nankang.. Thumbs up _________________ Ost Kuste. |

Be warned that the diameter of the 145/65 tires is 2 inches shorter than your standard 135 or 145 tires!!!!
This is good if you have a really hammered VW... but I ran into a problem with the 145/65s being too short for me.. I personally need that extra inch between my beam and the ground. Made the difference between my slamming my adjuster in to the ground or pushing rocks down the street... Plus I like the way the standard 145s fill the wheel well... I do rub my headlight bucket a little though which the 145/65s didn't do
Anyone want to buy a set of slightly used brand new 145/65s that only had one trip around the block? |

Well keep your personal opinion to yourself because 145/65s are only 1 inch shorter which means .5 ride height difference and if your worried about dragging an adjuster of why lower it?
Ill post pictures up asap - Kyle _________________ Ost Kuste. |

Personal opinion huh... How about looking up the specs on the tires:
Conti 145/65... overall diameter: 22.4"
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Contin...3D465TR5EC
Nankang 145's... overall diameter: 24.3"
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D6650
Ok.. so its 1.9" difference, and yes I've confirmed the specs by measuring the two tires side by side
I'm not saying anything bad about the tires, so don't get your feelings all hurt..Nor am I trying to discount your previous post. All I'm trying to do is just put info out there so someone may not buy a set of tires they don't really need or can't use... I never said they were bad tires. They are great for cars in the right circumstances...
It's not one tire fits all...
FWIW... the 145/65s are quite a bit cheaper.. just didn't work out for me

So its not lowered unless your beating the front suspension in the ground?
I couldn't get the car in the garage without hitting the adjuster on the driveway, and its not even steep.. I just want more than 1/2" of clearance so I can drive over the 3/4" bump to get into my garage...
