Hey Folks!

Been a member here for - well - a long long time. But I havent posted in the beetle forum since I sold my 63 in 02.

Well - today I was looking at the pics of my 63 for the first time in two years and thought - gee - it'd be great to have a beetle again.

I've been involved in Bay Busses since that time - and am working on a 78.

Well - low and behold - I was lost looking for the barber after work (they moved) when I spotted a Ghia in a used Car lot. Thought - Cool - lets take a look. What should I spy as soon as I pulled in?

A 62 beetle.

And not just any 62 beetle. A bone stock - still 6 volt beetle - in light creamy yellow. Oooooh!

Took a look and asked about it. Yah - some old lady died - she bought it used in Prescott Az in 1965 - and it has 78k on the clock. Still has the 1200 in it. Sure it runs. Fired right up - slight exhaust leak. Needs seat upholstery - was resprayed once - needs touch up. Has the original saphire radio. EVERYTHING is there. Only thing missing? Knob for the heater and air cleaner.

And I happened to have - in cash - the asking price.

$2800.

Never a wreck - never any rust - and drove just peachy all the way home. Its dark otherwise I'd have pics. Needless to say I bought it - and will be posting about it here later - maybe tomorrow.

Cheers!

Laughing

Thanks!!! I'd show pics but its dark out.

I plan to keep it absolutely bone stock. Freshen up the engine - new seals. Get the bearings lubed - new tires - upholstery - get the radio working - and that is it my friends.

For the first time - I found the "little old lady car" - she just passed away at 92 - and the family put it on consignment.

Ahhhh

So cool

Did it come with the owner's manual, dealer guide and other loveliness?

Mine did. Heh. I also got two VW service coupon booklets. The back page of the owner's manual contained the original owner's proud entries of his MPG over the course of a couple years.
Even had the Bendix Sapphire booklet. Treasures!

Show pictures, please.

Well....

Here you go - had to get new tires today.

Into the shop on Monday for some maintenance.

There is a slight whine from the tranny in second - and the front wheel bearings sound like they could use some grease.

Not bad though.

I also pick up the fender skirts on monday - forgot those...

Thanks all - she's a geat little car - named her after my Great Aunt Beatrice - Aunt Bea (or as we used to call her - Aunt Tiney - married last name was Tiney).

Anyway - she's nice. Noticed most of the whine is going away as I drive it. Also - not too sure if the engine IS a 1200. I know it needs a suplimental return spring on the accelerator though! Lol - doesn't retract right. Also has a jerry riged clutch cable (spliced cable?) - and a few other oddeties. Like the knob switch next to the ash tray - whats that??

All I have plans for are - new muffler (the one in it has a HUGE hole), Air cleaner, seals on the engine, upholstery, and touch up to a few spots of pain - and a new chrome strip for the hood. Maybe have the radio fixed. LOL.

Nice find. I grew up in Bisbee and might have seen that car tooling around town when I was a kid. Smile

I really like these "un-molested" stock finds! Did you get any photos of the car "back in the day"? Those would be nice to have to especially if there were photos of the day it was brought home and throughout the years.

Unfortunately I didn't get any old photos.

The old lady passed on a week ago - and her family just wanted to get rid of it. It was on consignment at a used car lot in town. They had two VW's - a 73 Ghia - and the 62 - both for 3k. They brought the price down to 2800 for me.

In Az they don't finance for under 10k - otherwise he said he would have sold it 100 times over.

So - the family turned it into the lot - and thats it. I could PROBABLY track down who owned it from the old title.

Anyway - sweet little car.

Nice one! Kinda reminds me of my 62 when I got it in 1989.

So it wasn't hard for you to get tires for it? They are starting to get scarce.

Bisbee is in the southeast area of Arizona, very close to Mexico. It's very arid (aride) so old beetles survive and palm trees (and cacti) abound Wink

Well - I didn't get the 165 / 15's for it - the guy at the store told me about the "beetle" tire. I went with the 195/15s - a tad wider - but oddly - the old 165's bias ply's were rubbing whereas the 195's don't.

I did verify it's a 1200 in there. Took a good look at it and degreased it. It looks pretty good. A tad tatty - but it runs like a sewing machine. Only problem is its loud - I Found a HUGE hole in the muffler behind 3/4. Are the 1200 mufflers hard to find?

I DID contemplate changing to a 1600 - but - decided against it as I bet the little 1200 will give me better milage - and with the way prices are going....

Also - I noticed the tin is WAY different from a 1600. There are not heater hoses - the carb has no return spring on it (it's on the cable itself), and the distributor is wide and fat.

So my BIG question is - on the 1200 - are parts hard to find?

One other thing - there is a turn knob on the dash next to the ashtray. FINALY figured out what it's for. I lifted the seat and found an after market blower in the heating system. Pretty cool! Was that normal? The switch looks OLD - like - at least from the 70's.

One last thing. Opened the glovebox - found out the last time the car was on the road was 1990. The registration was in there - with the sticker - unused. LOL.

I've always had big-bore (1385cc) pistons added to all my 40HP engines. They are a good balance between economy and HP. stock 1200 will be more economical, of course.

That "fat boy" distributor is correct - as is the throttle return spring. I'm using a later carb on my 62 now so I ditched the old throttle spring setup on mine. I still have it in my parts box in the trunk though.

You've got a "stale air" heater system. Same as I still have in my 62. It ducts the cooling air back into the car for heat. Works good, but whenever you get oil leaks, you smell it!!! Mufflers are available, I've bought a couple of NOS ones on eBay and seen them on the Classifieds here on TheSamba not too outrageously priced.

More on stale air heating here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=144966&
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=153281&

About the valve noise - I wonder if you have "long stud" cylinder heads on there. Those are adjusted much looser on their valves because they tighten up as the engine heat increases.

More on Long Studs/Short Studs here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210265&

Oh, and if you don't have it, I scanned and cleaned up my correct-for-my-car owner's manual and submitted to theSamba's archives, if you want to read it:
