1500 single port? that's a lot of car to be pushing around with that engine.
Keith Seume's research pegs a 67 beetle with a 1500 at about 32 mpg. In a Thing, with the different gearing of the tranny and the heavier weight as well as all the aerodynamic efficiency of a concrete block, i think you're more likely to see 19-22 mpg, in an absolutely perfect state of tune.

This is just one opinion, but I honestly believe that because of the weight a Thing will honestly do MUCH better with the stock 1600 DP engine.
They weigh alot more than a beetle and the 1600cc get's pretty good mileage regardless. I'm not sure, but wouldn't the 1500cc SP get worse mileage beacuse it had to work harder? I don't know...Maybe not.

I agree, a 1600 would be a bare minimum for a Thing. Not only will gas mileage suffer with a 1500, but longevity will suffer as well. additionally, a 1600 case is far more suitable for "growing" an engine.

The stock 1600 dp was enough fun to drive to make me spring for a 130 hp 1915cc engine. Seriously, Things are very under-powered with the 1600 dp. I doubt that you will like the hills with 100 fewer cc's than stock. I get about 22 mph.

But you can always upgrade the 1500. Just get into the swing of Things and get the car and you'll be on your way!

I think you are mistaken about weight being a problem. Things weigh no more and probably a bit less than a Beetle. No sound deadener, no double panels, etc. The loss of mileage is likely due to the absence of any aerodynamics, like the flat fron end. Things are geared a bit lower but that would mean the 1500 would be better.

Things do weigh more than a beetle- at least with the doors on. A Thing has a wet weight of 2290 lbs, while a beetle is anywhere between 1800 and 1980 lbs.

If you are willing to drop it down a gear the 1500sp will get you up the hill but just alot slower. With a 1776 a Thing seems to have just aboout as much power up to about 60 as my beatle with a 1600 does. Look at the sticker by the drivers door and you will be surprised how heavy it is. The thing weighs almost as much as my Westfalia. You may want to spring for a bigger motor.

Kinda hard to say without knowing where you live, and what you plan to put in there. In California you could probably get a longblock 1600cc installed for under $1500 if you look around, but if you live in Burma and want a turnkey 1915 depending on the builder and mods, it could run over 7 grand easy after shipping and installation. I'd guess a turnkey 1776 in the midwest delivered and installed would probably run around $3200 depending on the builder and the installer. For a longblock it would probably be less depending on the installer.
With a little homework and some mechanical ability you could do it for a lot less, and have the almost intoxicating satisfaction of knowing that YOU built it. Wink

Even though the 1600 is bigger & dual port and everything, I was always under the impression that the 1500 actually had more horsepower than a later 1600, thanks to a complete lack of emmissions equipment.

Magically, the published HP numbers are the same for the 1500 or 1600-
53 hp @ 4000 rpm. The torque on a brand new 1500 is actually a little higher- 78 ft/lbs. @ 2600 rpm vs. 72 ft/lbs. on a 1600. I suspect both figures may be a little fudged, as the acceleration and top speeds are improved on the 1600 beetles with the same gearing as the earlier 1500.
The key phrase is "brand new." The 1500 engine is not as durable as a 1600.

I like the single port design for better torque- i think the perfect low-budget Thing engine would be a kadron'd 1776 single port.
