i have an 89 westy with bad motor and bad automatic transmition.
i plan on buying a bus for the parts, and i was wondering, if i can get a good deal on one with a manual transmition, how hard it would be to do the swap.
any recommendations?
anything i should know?
thx

Why do you want a manual? Dont you like rubbing your girls thighs, holding a cup of coffee, and finding CD's onthe floor while driving better than shifting? I have a Westy syncro that is 4 spd. My buddy has a auto that I've driven. I dig the auto. If the terrain get treacherous or the hill is long, drop that old girl into 2nd or 1st. |

It's harder than you think. You have to add a clutch pedal assembly, run a hydrolic line to the rear, add the shifter linkage, etc. I remember doing the same thing to my 71 bug in high school. It was a pain in the rear then. I couldn't even think of doing so on a vanagon. I found it hard replacing the radio anttena on my 88 due to the amount of stuff in the dash. That's where you'll have to run the hydrolic line to. |

thanks for your input, guys.
i like the auto tranny, but i was thinking that if i got a very good deal on a van with manual tranny, the increase in reliability could compensate for the loss of comfort.
also much cheaper to maintain/repair if anything happens.
