|
|
I´m searching for any informations about the redcolored combinations with L21 Pearl Gray on Standard splits.
The handpainted body lines at the side of the split and the wheels ( logos at hubcaps ) where made in a kind of red, if you want to. Some splits don´t have them, they only left the fabrication with black VW-signs at the hubcaps, nothing else than Pearl Grey where on them. But what is about the redcolored lines ?
Is this made original from Volkswagen fabrication on an extra order by the customer ?? Is this written on pricelist also ?
The picture shows a standard with the combination, and is from a mechandising vidieo.....

I bet it is Coral red L 50 or L 351. A 1956 color (L351) but also used on splits (L50) |

This a Belgian 1950 Standard Split, restored to original condition. It also features the red lines at the side of the body. Unlike any other Standards it has chromed bumpers (also with this red line painted!), headlight rings, door handles and hub caps. I was told that this is 100% original and correct for Belgian standards from ’49-‘50… I’ve seen a few similar cars on VW meetings in Belgium, so I’m quite sure this is how they were delivered at the time… I don't know if this rare standard version was only for the Belgian market, or also sold in other countries in this color combination. The chrome trim may have been an extra added by the Belgian VW importer D'Ieteren to make standard beetles more attractive and sell more cars...

By the way, I would like to see an original split in Coral Red. I've never ever seen one and I don't think they ever existed. |
no, coral red (L351) was only available from '56 onwards

Aaah...Those old faded pics from the 50`s are great. A standard sunroof...cool.
About the coralred to be or not to be on splits. Coralred was a cabrio and heb color only. The name was coralred and the number was L 50.
But it didn´t look the same as the dental plate color we usually
connect with this color. It was alot brighter.. Thats about that |

A lot of literature out there states that Coral red was available in 1950. Like I said, I don't believe it.
Here is the only one I have ever seen in person. But like I said, i don't think it could be original.

Is that the one that B. Wolczanski in FL (W. McNabb Foreign) restored? I think it had a magazine feature a few years back? I do recall having met him once at Hershey (seemed like a very good guy, straight shooter), and I'd guess he wouldn't attempt to alter a car's originality. But then again, perhaps if an owner insists, and is willing to pay for it... _________________ Stock Steve

I'd be careful about using these photos for color reference. They look to me as if they are black and white pictures that have been colorized (as well as retouched but that's another matter). I have some old photos from the 60's of my parents and myself that were colorized that way by the photographer when they were first taken. It was a popular option at the time. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

It seems that both L50 and L351 were named 'Coral Red'... That doesn't necessarily means that both colors are the same.
To my opinion the split in this picture is not original, but repainted in the 'Oval Color' L351 |

They are not the same colors. I know that. L50 is a Coral Red color that is purported to be a split only color.
The car is NOT L351. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"
