A mate of mine had acquired a set of late rgb`s to fit to his stock `61 single, the question is does he need all the later brake setup i.e. backplates, drums, shoes etc or will the earlier stuff fit?

the later setup will work fine, you will need the later parking brake cables.
search, there is loads of info on bignut swaps.
