Just reinstalled my aluminum gas pedal after having it off for a week. I forgot how thin the original gas pedal is. What a difference the extra width makes! I had these custom made by Ultimate Pedals, they specializes in after market pedals. I extended the gas pedal off to the left about 2 inches, made it much more comfortable. The brake and clutch pedals were enlarged as well.

They probably still have the template that I sent to them. I can't remember the guy's name but he was really helpful.

Thanks cr@M...

It has been quite a while since I ordered them but I believe they were in the $50-$60 range.

Hi,

I am not fan of the racy look (would look weird in mine).
But I agree it's very nice looking.
Is it not slippery?

The wide accelerator pedal is interesting. I am looking for an improvement for long time driving. Cruise-control is 1st on the list, of course.

What's in the middle? An ottoman? Is that leather seating?

Should make for smooth heel-toe shifting. I have a similar-shaped extension in my '69 mini.

Thanks for your comments...

bd... I posted some pictures in the "member rides" area

or you can check out my slideshow on flickr

I got a couple of emails about the seats and console. The seats are made by Recaro and were originally in a Honda s2000. The seats are super comfortable and are pretty much a perfect fit in the Vanagon. I would say they sit about an 1" higher than the stock seats. Installing them was a pain in the can, but worth it. If only they were heated....

Crughy the thing in the middle is a console that I made from things I borrowed from my house. Good guess, it was formerly an ottoman. Unfortunately the base was too wide to fit in between the seats, so I used a couple of metal containers from ikea. I put a hinge on the back so I could use the containers for storage. Bolted a couple of couple of cup holders on the front and called it good.

Nice work. You did a really good job, especially considering the custom/odd sources.

nice job man ! I've got Recaros and am in the middle of building a center console too. looks like the one you have may be crowding the E break handle some ? mine is somewhat too but it's worth it.

I had a wide MOMO gas pedal in my Syncro and it would bend the rod that connects to the pivot under the floor. It seemed that having the pressure come that far off to the side would twist the pedal enough that the small piece the rod goes into would bend, then the throttle would stick and I would get frustrated. I pulled the pedal off, straightened everything out and regreased and all is good again.

Not sure if yours will do this but just something to look out for. I do think you could reinforce some of the way the pivot works (which would not be a bad idea anyway). I believe they get away with it since with the original pedal you can't really put any side force on it.

spaeth....
I haven't had a problem with the gas pedal yet, but will keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up.

Keane, Crughy, pete000, noganav, bd, Crankey...
Thanks for the comments! Stumbled upon the parking garage one day and decided to go back for a little photo shoot. This is the first vehicle I have ever wanted to fix up and take care of. Guess I got the Vanagon Fever.

Crankey...
The console does slightly get in the way of the E brake but not too bad. I thought about fab'n up some sort of an extension. I would love to see photos when you get finished with your console and seat project!

Where did you get that steering wheel? I don't like the stock wheel and that one looks to be exactly what I am looking for. Was it a direct install or did you have to mod it some? How much was it?

Thanks

Rhinoculips it was purchased from MOMO.

I went through the list and couldn't find the same wheel. I am guessing that they aren't making this particular one anymore. The steering wheel was actually already in the van when I bought it. So I am not sure how hard it was to put in.

Actually it is just the stock headliner. It's a carat, I am not sure if it is different than other models.
