|
|
I need help either tracking down or fabricating an oval-to-round air intake hose that goes from my air intake top (oval) to my air intake snorkel (round).
The oval air intake top is 3 1/2" x 2"
and it connects to a 2 1/2" round snorkel.
Any suggestions? The hose itself will only be about a foot in length at the most. _________________ -Kerry

Hmmm. Might try looking in Home Depot, etc. at those rubber connectors they have in the plumbing section. I just used them on my intercooler to make a 2-1/2 to 3 inch transition. Maybe you could soften the plastic on the oval and turn it into a 3" round? |

you can get them from a dealer if you have to (I lost mine also)
I cant remember what the cost was but it was in their computer, but I believe it has to come from Brazil?
I did a search with the part # and I think it only showed results from Russia (can't rember part#) _________________ 1987 Doka 1.9TD from Germany gasser DU tranny, fuel turned up, 1.6 LDA pin, boost at 15 psi,egt and boost gauges, stock diesel tach, air filter behind passenger tail light, IC to come

I'm kind of tired this morning so forgive me if my thinking is way off base.
Wouldn't you need a 2.75" ID tube to fit over the oval inlet? Flexable tubing of some sort to conform to the oval shape? That would leave a .25" difference at the snorkle outlet, yes? You could wrap the snorkle outlet with one wrap of .125" (1/8") rubber sheet to make up the difference. The rubber could be glued to the outlet or maybe you could use .125" plastic sheet and countersunk bevel headed pop rivets to hold it in place. Maybe? _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Thanks guys. I'll head over to Home Depot today. I thought there might be other VW's that use this configuration but I will try the ad-hoc method once again! I guess I have to start getting used to this if I'm going to hang on to the '82 diesel. _________________ -Kerry

Kerry,
You can also use aircraft SCAT tubing. IF you go to the FBO part at Orange County airport one of the FBO's may sell you a short piece, normally it comes in 3' sections cut to fit. It is a flexible rubberized tubing that is held rigid with a wire spiral inside. You snip out a bit of the wire on the end and it is very flexible so it will conform to any shape. We use it on air induction system on piston aircraft.

I need that part, too. Right now it's been held together by a substantial amount of duct tape. Keep us posted on what you end up doing.
It looks like it's either 068 129 967 (elbow F 24-C-200 000) or 068 129 967A (elbow F 24-D-000 001) if you want to order it.
They're both listed when you search busdepot, but they're not cheap.
Good to see another diesel vanagon person close by. |

get something with the wire spiral in it. I used regular rubber tubing looks kind of like radiator hose. and that crap collapsed under the load of the engine. I was shocked but the guy at napa said its not rated for that kind of use. I wouldnt think it would pull enough air to do that though. Maybe something is not right on mine though. _________________ 95 GMC Yukon 6.5 TD 2 Door Tow pig/ Daily driver.

Chris, you definitely didn't sleep through math class.
I used a little calculus today to figure out the circumference of the ellipse (oval) and came up with 8.95". From there I assumed that the circumference of the oval, if stretched into a circle, would be the same as the circumference of a circle and calc'd the diameter of the circle to be around 2.85"
I will try some 2 3/4" ID tubing (since I don't think they make 2 55/64") and see if I can't heat it up to get it to form into an oval. _________________ -Kerry

Go to your plumbing store and get a super thick rubber connector from the pvc pipe section, then use hose clamps and make up the difference with black pvc pipe.
I investigate all of this when I was going to try to make a new air snorkel set up. It should work pretty well. |

Looked like the best thread for this...
Been finding what looked like barbequed ruffle potato chips in the air box for the last several filter changes. Turns out they're pieces of the inner laminated paper from the snorkle tube. Took it out yesterday...wow, serious flow restriction in that sucker.
Went to Lowe's, got a section of 3"x8' flex aluminum duct, part#328922 ($9.46), deformed it into an oval and fitted the other snorkle parts onto it.
Then wrapped the whole kit'nkaboodle in duct tape
and reinstalled.
Very happy with the result. Hope this can help others who are finding snacks in their airbox! _________________ 87 Westy Camper |

Beautiful, Thanks for the info on this. I just checked mine and it is all tweaked. It looks like a Home Depot visit today . _________________ 1990 VW Vanagon tin top weekender Carat

I have a 1.6 diesel out of a rabbit so my air intake manifold is slightly different. I am trying to connect the manifold to the snorkel, has anyone have any experience doing this?
You can get an idea bellow

Funny course of events. While I was in the engine compartment, I notice that I had previously failed to fully attach the hosing coming from the AFM away from the filter box. The hose was partially attached but not completely. I am wondering if this might effect back pressure in the pistons possibly exacerbating my normal oil leaks?
Also, would driving down the freeway with gas leaking from the tank cause a nasty film buildup on my rear windshield, besides it inherent explosive disadvantages? |

Check out samco silicon hoses. They have sizes that reduce from 3" to 2 1/2 or 2 3/4. They will also conform to the oval and round easily.
There are a few other silicon hose manufactures that are less expensive just can't remember off the top of my head. |

Went to Home Depot today to finally get a replacement hose for the air intake snorkel. I didn't want to spend $10 for the aluminum hose so in the roofing department I found a flexable downspout for $2.39. I got 2 and pieced them together. Here are the pics. I already put it all in and if fit nice and snug. Should last as long as the original I hope.

Look at the air duct and how smooth it is compared to the bellows of the water ducting that you bought. Air likes smooth, otherwise it creates turbulence and slows the airflow. |
