|

so, for my senior project in high school I was planning to build a turbo motor.
heres a (VERY!) rough outline of what I was planning on:
-1776cc
-probably a scat block
-single turbo with the holley on top setup
-all the necessaries to keep the "blow up" factor down {such as: upgrade cooling, wastegate, etc.}
NOW, the thing is...where are good places to buy from for a (basic) kit?, what are the general guidelines to follow (always do's and always don'ts), how stupid do I sound? (don't have to answer that one).
now throw whatever else you want at me, I've looked into through engine buliding books and whatnot, but a book only says so much.
thanks-nicholas _________________ money money money. |

I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're rich? When I was in high school, I was barely able to get a bottom end sorted for a mild stroker. If you or your parents have deep pockets, start searching the forums for other turbo motor setups. |

a combination of smart saving getting ready for a build like this and also me working a job as many hours as I want at the parents buisiness over the summer. Theres no way my parents would pull that money out of their ass just to have me build something that can make me go faster, hah. I'm workin' towards it. _________________ money money money. |

Rebuild a couple 1600's first. |
Since you have built one, brush up on turbo theory, and turbo systems. My first VW build was the 1915 turbo I have, so it's possible if you know your way around an engine. See my sigline for build info.
I can give you some pointers:
It's costly if you don't use used parts (do a junkyard turbo build if you're low on $$)
If you don't retard your timing under boost, or lower your base timing, you will increase the engine's probability of detonating, and destroying itself.
Draw through turbochargers require a carbon seal to avoid sucking oil into the turbo, and making a smokescreen. Some get away without it, but I recommend it.
Get a wideband oxygen sensor, with guage. It's sooooo much easier to tune an engine when you can see what's going on. I have JAW wideband, it's cheap and effective.
Don't think you're going to start the engine, and start boosting right away. Set a goal, and work your way up to it. Confront issues if the come up right away.
Have fun! _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Don't get too hung up on the aircooled part, it's just the cooling system. Apart from that, it's just the same as any other internal combustion engine out there, and therefore subject to most of the same tuning rules. Learn well, and apply what you learn. If you have question, ask us and we'll try to point you in the right direction. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

I was under the impression incerstanding the nature of regular volkswagen engines that adding that kind of modification to the motor made it finicky. Good to know though that its not as bad as I thought. _________________ money money money. |

Not at all, it just has to be done right. My engine has EFI and turbo, so it starts at the turn of the key, doesn't need to be nursed until it's warm like a carb engine does, and never needs to be tweaked because the computer doesn't 'wear' like a carb. Everything about it is better with EFI, I'll never install another carb. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Forget the SCAT block unless you already have it.
They are rare and expensive.
Get the CB aluminum block.
Use GOOD rods and a GOOD oil pump. _________________ Marty

Eh, I think stock rods would be enough for a little 1776 turbo, but upgrade to ARP hardware. I'd have used stockers on the 1915 myself, but I couldn't get the bolts for some reason. In the end it was just easier to buy HD Unitech rods with ARP bolts already in them on one of my many trips to CB. 26mm oil pump will be fine for this engine, but full flow it for sure. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

depends.....
What do you want?
You can put a small or big turbo, low boost, high boost etc.
It is your motor.
Read, read, read.
There is no set answers |

T25 would probably be best for a 1776, on the smaller side so it spools quick. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Read up on Scott's low buck turbo set up. I would start REAL basic and then upgrade as my body of knowledge grew.

Have you read 'turbomania' by Bob Tomlinson? - loads of good info from someone who knows his stuff. |
