o.k. i did a search and all it did was make things worse. i found 10 different answers that were all different lol. i did a conversion, wired everything up correct. but when i dissconect the battery it dies. i heard that if the idiot light is not working then this will happen then i heard the oppisite. my light is not hooked up. im doing the wireing the beginning of next week. the car is on stands and is not going anywhere right now but its 1 thing at a time and i just want to make sure this works so i can start on the next thing |

You do need the idiot light for the alternator to work.
It is the current that gets the alternaotr started.
But don't disconnect the battery while it is running. If you need a volt meter, Harbor Freight sells them for $3.99. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

how can you test it with out the battery off? if i check the small wire at the battery i get nothing, if i check the larger red wire i get 12v. but could that not just be back feed from the battery? |

Check it from post to post on the battery. With the engine at a fast idle, it should show above 14V. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

hooked up the dash lights ect. i didnt do the battery test because you guys were saying thats a bad idea, but when i click the ignition on all the lights work, when i start it the lights go out. is it safe to assume that means its working? i wasnt getting 14v at the alt, but more like 12.7 |

pulling the cable works to check the alt. using a voltmeter is the best way b/c like it sounds in your case the alt. isn't working . I would....get the voltmeter check the voltage of the battery....start the car and check again....like russ said it should be in the high 13's or 14v . 12.7v just is'nt gonna keep your battery up . If the alt. new and you have been wiring the car I would go back and re-check everything just to be sure . |
