For those who don't know, we had the 62 SO-22 above insured for 18k when it was totaled in an accident in 2006 shortly after being put together. The insurance company offered us approximately 3k for the bus, in spite of having proof of having spent more than three times that amount on the bus within 3 months of it being wrecked. Nearly two years later we have settled for 30k with a 5k buy back!
We've known for a little bit, but we were instructed by our attny. to keep quiet until we were paid and done. Thanks much for all your efforts in helping to prove value folks, it has made all the difference. Even the attny representing the insurance company had to comment about what a close knit group bus drivers are! _________________ I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave.

nice! congrats and best of luck in the future. it's just a shame insurance companies gotta be the way they are, esp. in light of them knowing it's a bad time for their customer. _________________ Extravagant Lifestyle

We were so hard up I probably would have taken 10k just after the wreck, so it was worth waiting for! _________________ I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave.

There are some posted in the forums that other people took after the wreck. You should be able to pull them up by searching for ronnie and maine under split bus.
My original plan was to fix the bus, which changed after I got it home and figured out how badly it was damaged. As it turns out, I don't feel quite the same driving them as I used to, and no longer drive one daily or long distances, so the heard will be thinned considerably. I'm going to have a bunch of parts and a few buses for sale this summer.
The westy is for sale, but someone here has first rights on it, if we can't work it out I'll go on to the next interested party, or just ebay it. _________________ I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave.

Right on...that's an amazing settlement. Is it safe to assume you're looking for a different insurance company now? _________________ 9th Owner of a 1971 Tintop Westy

LOL, I certainly will be. I was pretty happy with the settlement considering I didn't think I'd even get the 18k. I had a good attny, and much support from the folks here on the samba. _________________ I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave.

it was stated value, and after the wreck they said from the start that they would pay out ACV or repair costs, which ever was less. As it turns out the value is 30k and the repair is pushing 40k. My attny threw in something about a breach of good faith that would have come up in trial, and we had substantial supporting evidence.
It is a HUGE weight off Greg. After a few more months of physical therapy, and some vocational rehab/cognitive therapy I hope to be back close to where I started. _________________ I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave.

A good attorney can make all difference and sure did here. Some insurance companies are just plain stupid. They can be a horses ass by not settling early and it costs them more in the end. I see it all the time.
Congratulation Ronnie and good to see you coming along . Tom |
